I'm getting a new tv shortly and the one I'm looking at doesn't have any scart sockets. I have an old combined dvd/vcr I'd still like to plug in and I see it's possible to get adaptor leads. Do they work ok? I've seen various reviews, some say they're ok, other not. I'd not bother other than I have loads of old videos I'd like to be able to watch.

Which model is it?

You may find that there is an adaptor available, but no socket to keep the telly slim
i.e. the panasonic one at http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Panasonic-Genuine-Scart-...

Not too bad with the extra 10% off.

Cue experts telling me I should have bought xyz instead.

That's an error apparently. It has:
Connectivity:
3 USB ports and 4 HDMI sockets.
Smart TV.
HDMI 2.0.
1 DVI socket.
PC input socket.
Component video socket.
Composite socket.
Optical connection.
Headphone socket.
AV socket.
Wi-Fi enabled.
Ethernet connection.
DLNA compatibility.
Mobile high-definition link.
Miracast.
Open browser.

I've checked on the Samsung website and on Richer Sounds, definitely no Scart.

Has component video though

Just get a Scart to Component lead and use that instead

Thanks for that. I'm not up on what'll talk to what successfully.

I'd probably spend some time digitising the videos and then putting them on to a USB storage that plugs in to the TV, or download/rebuy if possible.

the VHS will probably look absolutely awful on an HDTV.

Yeah, that or you could even just use composite video with something like this

Those are 2 different cables with different functions. Component, red, green, blue is better quality picture but has no sound. RCA is red, white audio for stereo sound and yellow for picture. VHS will struggle in the best circumstances on your new TV so, if you don't need audio at the TV go with component. (RGB). You can run a separate red white cable to your audio receiver for sound.

I do want audio so confusion reigns!
To humour me, let's dumb this down. Is there a simple way (eg a single cable or adaptor) that will enable a vcr with a scart plug directly into the above mentioned telly and work as intended. I've looked around and had conflicting advice.
I appreciate the quality may not be brilliant but it is currently plugged into a scart-equipped HDTV and is as good as it ever was.
Converting all the tapes to a digital medium is a non-starter as there are so many.

That is what you need. It will do both Audio and Video.

Thanks folks. Apologies for the dimness, electrickery isn't my forte. That cable gets the prize for the highest number of acronyms in the description.

Ordered! It arrives on Friday, same day as the TV. I'll report back.

I remember getting my first TV with SCART sockets, and looking forward to what was quite possibly going to be the best quality picture there would ever be! hehe

I remember getting a Sky decoder box when it was analogue. Had to find this odd thing called 'SCART' never heard of it back then and you could not pop into Poundland. Drive 50 miles to get one and it cost me £26! and was only 1/2 metre long.

I still have SCART as well on some things as they are old but still like using them. Never thought they would be wiped out. Maybe they do a SCART to HDMI converter...Oh they do on eBay costing about £20 although they don't look like they autoswitch.

Replace all your kit every few years. Progress! Feel for me, I'm still using a Motorola Razr V4 and a microwave oven I bought in the early eighties from Rumbelows.

Do all VCR/DVD players offer component video output ? The good thing about ones that do is that they are progressive video, but I guess most modern panels now deinterlace/upscale the inputs regardless.

I think you'll find that component out is mostly only on players of both kinds from a relatively narrow time period from the late 90s to the mid-2000s
