I currently have a 8/9 year old 42" LG 1080p LCD TV hooked up to a Virgin Box and PC based media centre.

Both the Virgin Box and Media Centre are hooked up by RCA cable to my Marantz PM 4400 amp feeding some classic Tannoy speakers.

However, I want to get rid of the huge, noisy, unreliable PC media centre and go with a Amazon Fire stick with Kodi installed on it.

However - the Fire stick doesn't have any audio out and my TV only has an optical audio out.

I've tried a couple of optical to RCA converters and they don't work.

So do I upgrade to a AV recover which accepts a optical in or upgrade my TV with RCA or headphone jack out?

Thanks!

Check the manual for your telly, there's a good chance it can't pass audio from an HDMI input to the optical output. This is quite a common issue, several TV brands / models will only output audio generated from their built in tuner.

If your TV can't pass audio to the optical output you're in a bit of a fix. Using an amp with an optical input won't work but what you could do is buy an AV receiver, hook up the TV to its HDMI output, connect Virgin to the amp and plug the Fire TV stick into the amp not the TV. That'll work fine.

If you change your TV make certain the replacement passes audio from inputs to its optical out, you'll still need a DAC as almost all TVs have dropped analogue outputs, you also will need one that supports multi channel audio.

Simplist route is to change the amp.

If the TV has a scart socket, you could pick up audio out from that.

Not from an HDMI input, there's no D-A conversion between input and output.

Have you tried an esynic DAC optical to phono converter? Available on Amazon for £13? I've not, but it seems to get good reviews.

Using a TV which has a headphone output should work though?

I'm thinking it's best upgrading to a TV with a headphone jack than faffing about with a AV amp.
