I need a new TV for our kitchen/diner. Current thinking is it will be a 40 inch LCD.

The rooms ~40 metres square so it needs to be loud. Can anyone recommend a modernish LCD with a tiny bezel but decent sound?

I like the look of this http://www.johnlewis.com/samsung-ue40j5100-led-hd-...

Dunno about that model, & therefore this reply is not massively helpful to you....
....but most flatscreen's we have looked at claim to be 20W output....sounds like you may want to find one claiming more?
(not that the raw number tells the whole story, of course....)

Can you fit a sound bar under the TV?

How about ceiling speakers and a separate amplifier?
I use a Monitor audio ceiling speaker (stereo speaker in one unit) and a Denon microsystem in the kitchen/diner. I considered using an amp hidden in the ceiling, but the Denon allows me to play music via an Airport, as well as CDs.

Some sound okay at low volumes, but once you turn them up they become very "tinny", simply because you need a large speaker for bass and there's no way to fit one inside the thin case of the TV. The only way you'll get anything decent is with external speakers of some sort - even a small pair of PC speakers like these would be an improvement.

Good point, unfortunately not all manufacturers seem to show the output.

Possibly, but it's only for watching the news, or whatevers on while I cook. Seems a bit overkill

Its a newly built/plastered/decorated room and I should have thought about this at the time! it would be gutting to have to channel new cables into the fresh plaster.

I wouldn't touch a Samsung personally, my folks bought one 2 years ago and the screen has just stopped working. A quick Google shows tons of people have the same problem, cheap capacitors expiring just outside the warranty etc.
I know what you mean, we have a 5 year old one which has been repaired twice. The other options, LG seem to get numerous mentions for their poor sound. Panasonic I like but their smart TV is lagging behind. Sony? maybe I'll go and listen to some.

We suffer this with the current TV, once it's up over 50% volume it doesn't seem to get louder, just more tinny and it's difficult to listen too.
Maybe a soundbar's the only way
