Saw this film the other day, and it was one of the better films I have seen lately, but I wondered if it was just me, or if any others had difficulty understanding what was being said (particularly by the Fitzgerald / villain) character?
Never mind 3D or all that gubbins, I could have done with sub titles to convert the `English' being spoken into something I could understand.
I realize the film went to extraordinary lengths to achieve accuracy in what it was depicting, but missing out on a lot of the dialogue, did take a bit of the shine off what was otherwise an excellent piece of work.

Agree.
Too much mumbling.

I watched it last nite and thought the same - for me it was only a real problem with Tom Hardy's character, and it was definitely to the detriment of the movie and his performance.

Something went a bit wrong for it to be nominated for an oscar for best sound mixing!

Tom Hardy mumbles his way through every film he's in, not sure why they keep hiring him.

Thought it was excellent, apart from the mumbling which was almost entirely unintelligible. The only other thing that was a bit off was his ankle after the bear attack, it was sticking out at a right angle and seemed to heal itself.

Waterproof gunpowder appeared to be handy too.

I agree about Fitzgerald, couldn't understand him at times.

As for the film as a whole...the only Oscar it's worthy of is best cinematography. No way is that a best movie winner, unless it's been a particularly poor year for film.

According to several female sources, he has knicker elastic snapping abilities, so acting not hugely important

Not sure how anyone would know, but perhaps the mumbling speech type was used to provide an accurate reflection on how the people of that time and place actually spoke?
Given its `almost' complete non intelligibility (to me at least) some subtitles (as they used to cover the French and native Indian spoken in the film) would have been useful.

True Grit was exactly the same. Sometimes, attention to detail is a bad thing.

Looks like this film achieved five awards, such as best film , best actor etc, which I guess is OK but I am fairly sure it did not win one for best script / dialogue smile Anyone here know the other categories it achieved awards in?
