Is this possible with Sonos?
Discussion
I'd really appreciate some help with a (potential) Sonos system.
I have a newly set up tv that is used only with an AppleTV. As is the norm nowadays, the sound output of the tv itself is essentially unusable.
I am trying to determine whether there is a way to route the audio output of the AppleTV to a pair of Sonos Play:1's - these would fit perfectly on the bookshelves either side of the new tv. They would be used as the main speakers for the tv, and for listening to music in the ordinary Sonos way.
Elsewhere in my house I have a Sonos Playbar equipped tv,which does exactly what I want. I can't use a Playbar in the problem location as it simply won't fit.
Using a new AppleTV with a pair of Play:1's presents two problems:
1. There is no audio output (digital or otherwise) from the AppleTV other than the HDMI that carries the picture
2. There are no physical inputs on the Play:1's
I like a challenge!
I have resolved issue 1 so have a digital audio feed in either optical or coaxial format.
Issue 2 is more taxing. I need to send this digital audio to stream to "something" that will send the sound to the Play:1's.
Does this something exist?
Thank you in advance!

Yes, a connect is the only way to do this and stay within the sonos ecosystem.
Line input on the connect will then convert it to a sonos signal for the Play:1's but I would be a little wary of the potential time delay between encoding, streaming and playing back out when linked to devices in the same room as the screen.
I might try it here for you, see if timing is an issue.

I tried it about 18 months ago, feeding the TV into the connect line input - there is no digital input on the connect only an output (playbar is the only thing with a digital input) - using the line in there was a noticeable delay. I let my devices (a PC not an apple TV) feed audio to the TV via HDMI and let the TV do the D2A (for devices plus TV signal) and fed the line in to the sonos.
The other problem I had using sonos as a amp for the TV was the connect sub output has a low pass filter on it that is fixed and non removable, and wouldn't match with my cambridge minx setup...
I'm using a marantz CD500 media streamer now, both line and digital in.

Thank you. The Sonos web-content positions the Connect as a device that lets you pipe Sonos audio through your existing hifi (which presumably has speakers!). Using it to pipe non-Sonos audio into a Sonos system is quite different, and not mentioned - which I find surprising.Line input on the connect will then convert it to a sonos signal for the Play:1's but I would be a little wary of the potential time delay between encoding, streaming and playing back out when linked to devices in the same room as the screen.

Anyway, I'm sure you are right. I hadn't thought about the possibility of audio delay. If you are able to test this I'd be enormously grateful!

Is this ATV4? That has a lightning socket on the back. Get a lightning to 30 pin cable (a proper Apple one) and a Sonos dock (ebay, probably - I don't think Sonos make them any more). Then select the dock as your source for the Play 1s.
