Bonkers.

When my in-laws stay over at my house I let them watch their normal soaps and stuff as I am not interested in those programmes and have better things to do but whenever I give them the remote they will actively skip over the BBC HD channel to find the standard def channel.I remember asking them why some time ago and they said something like they don't go in for all that new fangled stuff and the 'real' BBC channel is perfectly fine for them.

Now they don't have bad eye sight and they both have laptops and smartphones and while I would not say they were tech savvy they certainly know how to use technology. They also paid out 1500 on a 55" 4k TV about a year ago and yep they watch SD on that as well. Can anyone explain this odd behaviour?

I know it shouldn't bother me but I does offend my eyes when I see my lovely OLED with such a dreadful quality picture.

Its not just the really old gippers. my missus doesnt actively avoid the HD channels, just doesn't click HD at all. Ever. Drives me a tiny bit bonkers, but thats down to the UI on the telly, as it really ought not to differentiate between BBC1 SD or HD. The only proper reason for it might be that 101 is BBC1 SD, whereas BBC1 HD is miles away, so clicking GUIDE leaves you down there amongst the Red Button, and the Rabbit Gay Dating channels biggrin

The wife does this, "there is no difference" according to her; errr yes there is. I don't watch it but when Strictly is on with all its sequins and shiny gold and silver bits they get all pixelated and blurry, on HD it is so much clearer, "no difference" she says.

Every so often I will go through the Virgin planner and re-set all the planned recordings from SD to HD.

Yup my misses claims she can't tell the difference on our 55" 4K TV. Up unitl last year, she had an old SD CRT 32" TV. When she had her flat, she used to invite me over to watch the football as she gets all the sports for free. I couldn't actually make anyone out on the screen!

If I get home and BBC is on, I immiediately switch to the HD channel, it's so much clearer. She's the same with music. She's always asking why I upgrade headphones, Hi-Fi, etc as the "standard" stuff is fine.

No, no it isn't.

I do the opposite, so that all the crap she records takes up less space.

My missus does this too. I think she just can't be bothered to remember 141 for BBC1, 227 for Channel 4 etc. And can't be bothered to scroll through the guide. So she just hits 101, or 104, and then when I come in the room I switch it over. When SKY change 101 to be BBC1 HD, 104 for Channel 4 HD and all that, i.e. someone else makes the effort, then she'll watch the HD ones.

Perplexing.

With my Mum, it was really hard getting across to her there was another channel for BBC1, which would make best use of her new 48" Panasonic TV. She must have had it 5, 6 years now and I still don't think she's up to speed.

My girlfriend does the same. I don't know how she doesn't see the difference.

To provide some balance to this, my girlfriend refuses to watch SD and will actively search for a HD alternative.

The only thing I will actively watch the HD channels for are sport and nature stuff - where it really does enhance the experience (especially nature).

But just to see Rob Brydons weathered features a bit better - I honestly just don't think to

To provide more balance.

I also actively swap to the HD version of a channel & get very unhappy if I have to watch something in SD

Just set the TV back to HD when they popped to the shops.

I went out for a run for 30mins, came back and its back on SD again.

They are having a go at me aren't they? Is it possible to purge my Skybox of SD channels? I can honestly say I will never ever watch an SD channel.

To provide even more balance, I'm a man and couldn't give a flying fk if it's just regular TV.

Maybe worth switching over for a film or F1 or something but to watch the news?! Couldn't give a st.

My mum 'prefers' SD - simply because (on Freeview at least) it's a pain when the local news comes on and can't be shown - can see her point, but it drives me spare!

To be fair, whilst I clearly notice the difference and my OCD refuses to leave it on SD, I've only just looked up at the TV whilst reading this thread and realised I hadn't bothered switching to HD since I switched on tonight! biggrin

Mrs 7HS is luckily an HD fan, so no troubles here... It is a pain that local news isn't broadcast in HD, but it's not a real hardship. I do find it odd that lots of adverts seem to be SD though.

Does remind me of a builder my parents used many years ago when they were building their new house. He had a colour TV, but only paid for a B&W licence (apologies to the kids of PH who have no idea what that is!).

"But we do turn up the colour at the weekend"!

But they can spot the difference in a pair of black shoes from across the other side of the store.

No idea about other platforms but in Virgin Media BBC One HD doesn't carry the local news opt-outs. So I always have news, BBC Breakfast etc on SD for that reason.

It is really annoying that the BBC haven't worked out how to do that yet. We have BBC One HD on in the morning and I am not sure what is worse, watching the main programme in HD and then suffering their weird 'test card' every 30 minutes or watching the whole thing in SD.

I'd agree with the people that say watching the news and normal TV in SD is not the end of the world, but modern full HD TVs are so poor at processing SD that it just looks awful. When I had my old 480p plasma, SD looked really good and HD very similar, but on my current model SD is just fuzzy.
