If I put the surround sound system on (one button to turn it on, but the TV volume down has to be turned down) my missus gets huffy with me and accuses me of messing about. I think makes films about a million times better, but she doesn't get it all.
If you have an AV amp with HDMI/ARC and your TV allows it (various names according to TV brand), then you can set it up so that turning the TV on turns the AV amp on. Plus any sound related functions on the TV remote actually adjust the sound in the AV amp (ie volume up/down/mute). No special remote required and the OH can't bypass it only turn it up or down same as the TV speakers (which will be off in this mode).

My main room and conservatory are set this way, so they sound much better than the horrible TV speakers. Granted the sub has to be put on separate in both cases due to lack of auto on function, but I can live with that if it's just ordinary TV news, etc.

I guess I'm lucky though as I've never known my missus to ask me to turn it down and we usually watch films about 10dB down from reference which to be honest is loud enough for me anyway.
