I've been told today that if the hobs are gas and the oven/grill are electric then it's possible to run it from a mains socket rather than a specific oven supply (which I don't have). Does anyone know if this is accurate?

Yes our previous range cooker ran the oven from a 13A socket. Here's one:

I think it depends on what the oven/grill does

Not necessarily, depends on rating of cooker. Some might, most won't.
