Yes, that's how it's designed. I just use the Google Chromecast app. I can use it to cast all sorts of A/V sources - Spotify, Amazon Music, iPlayer, iPlayer Radio, Tune In radio, Google Photos etc etc etc.
Why it doesn't work with Apple I don't know. But going on past history it's quite likely due to Apple software engineers being encouraged to make Apple-specific things a little clunky therefore encouraging you to buy their streaming box at £69 rather then the Google one at £15......

I connect my iPad to the airstream and stream all music from the iPad. I did use it with I tunes on the iPad when I subscribed to I tunes match.
Picked one up at that price for the bedroom sound system. Very pleased. Way more convenient than using bluetooth and the sound quality seems better to boot.
I wonder if Sky Q will implement google cast support at some point. It already includes AirPlay and bluetooth so it makes sense unless the license for AirPlay stipulates it must be exclusive (wouldn't surprise me).

I hope Sky Q fully supports Google cast too, you can sort of use it with the YouTube app although it's slightly different. It might be a case of the Q boxes slowly getting apps that support the feature, rather than a blanket support like a Chromecast, in which case it makes Netflix support doubtful sadly.
