I think I've narrowed my choice to either the panasonic http://www.richersounds.com/product/tv---all/panas... or the Sony http://www.richersounds.com/product/tv---all/sony/...

Heart says panasonic but head says Sony because it's 5 inches bigger. Any input from resident experts greatly appreciated!

Thanks

At £850 you are into OLED money, why anyone would buy an LCD now OLED can be had for the same price is beyond me.

I would be getting my head around HDR and understanding the delivery and types. E.g. One set I looked at would stream but not on hdmi input.

Also Currys have been playing with oled prices recently, 2016 models due out or are out. The shifted 2015 4K models up a lot then dropped them recently.

I picked up the sony last friday from currys for £849, I was coming from a 40" bravia W series 2008year model so anything was going to be an improvement but also wanted to stay with sony. I have a samsung and LG LCD screens around the house which are newer and the original sony always looked better IMO.

The sony gets a good write up and I'm more than happy with the SKY HD, streaming 4k from the TV apps and android box add ons in 4k or HD that I run on it.

edit - also currys are doing cash for goals during the euros, pick a home nation team and for every goal scored you get £10 cash back. You do however only get 5yrs guarantee not 6 as per richer sounds. 5 goals though will get you another £50 off it which is more than plausible if you pick england......maybe.

I bought the Sony just after Christmas for the cave of man.

I'd recommend it, really quick start up and I like the fact you can get kodi on it without a separate box. I also have a 3/4 sized waxwork of Carrie Fisher, average quality and to be honest a bit of a ropey likeness.

I can't seem to shift the latter, everyone either assumes it is a medium sized corpse and/or cursed by some kind of golem.

OLED isn't as bright as a an LED. Between a OLED and LED at the same price bracket you'll really struggle seeing the difference with the naked eye. Horses for courses and all that.

Anyway, I narrowed my choices to the same two TV's late last year. The Panasonic isn't really a Pansonic, they use some cheap ass Chinese company to build the lower end TV's then brand it. The Sony actually had very reserved reviews for last year, I think because of the OS - but look at the same TV's this year which are practically the same and they are raved about. I went for the Sony model and never looked back. I love it. The Android OS got a bad rep from early in it's life but every update release has done nothing but improve it, it's practically lag and issue free now. I don't think I could move away from Andorid TV now.

4k is sublime and 4k HDR is unbelievably good. The only negative thing I can think about this TV is it's edge lit, but clouding is only visible from funny angles which you'd never watch the TV at anyway. Scenes which are dark with bright light aspects (think night with bright lights) and the blacks could be darker but that's the nature of the beast with edge lit, you won't get any better unless you double your money and it's a non issue for me anyway, the scenes still look out of this world.

Just buy it, you won't regret it.

Is a TV not something you keep for two or three years?

I would rather wait 24 hours and have one of the best TVs ever made.

What a crock of horsest.

That is one of the most ignorant comments I have heard, the difference is staggering.

And regarding the brightness, Calibrate the LCD and it is not as bight as the OLED, that I can guarantee you.

Nah, very little difference. Also lifespan of OLED is drastically shorter than that of LED and it suffers from screen burn during gaming like the old plasmas did years ago.

Its the latest gimmick, making each pixel its own "bulb", but its not necessarily the best option.

It is if you want the ultimate in picture quality.

I suppose you never thought plasmas where any good either?

Nonsense. My last plasma, a 50" LG, lasted 14 years. Was brilliant and was sad to see it go.

OLED will last the same as plasma, OLED is per pixel driven as was plasma, and OLED is no more susceptible to screen burn than plasma either.

So you may only get 15 years out of an OLED using it for 8 hours a day compared to 25 years out of an LCD, it is a moot point.

If you genuinely can't see the difference between them then no problem, but I reckon you have not seen one set up properly in a proper home enviroment if that is the case.
The differences between OLED and even the best LCD based display is not subtle, the difference between OLED and the Pioneer Kuros and Panaonic commercial panels and Z series is not subtle.

I gamed on plasmas for 15 years, never had an issue with screen burn, I have left the Singstar logo on screen from 4am through to midday the next day, yeah there was some retention, but and afternoon of TV viewing cleared it. It is a non issue.

Don't get me wrong, I have a Sony W905 LCD myself in the conservatory, it is fine, but walk back into the other room and see the Kuro and you realise there is still so much that LCD struggles with and always will.

Anyway, I will shut up, it was only a suggestion, if he is happy to buy into LCD I'm sure he will love it. All I was saying is there is now something on another level for similar money out there.

Probably best. Would you be interested in my Carrie Fisher waxwork? You seem to be easily led by salespeople.

No, I ISF Calibrate displays across the UK, so get to see quite a few.

Have been doing so for the last 20 years.
