Our telly (Samsung UE55F8000) is connected to a Yamaha YSP2200 sound bar via HDMI. If I use the Netflix app that's built into the TV, I don't get Dolby 5.1 via the ARC.

Would using an optical cable from the TV to the soundbar give me DD5.1 from Netflix?

Thanks.

Probably not. Most TV's (all I have ever had) only pass through a stereo signal via the optical output.

When Netflix app is running: TV Menu > Sound > Additional Sound Settings > Dolby Digital 5.1 / DTS

The TV defaults to PCM. Every. Time.

Checked the manual, TV does support DD5.1 output. Will track down a Toslink cable and have a go.

What happened when you went in to additional settings?

It was as you said - set to PCM.

So it's working now, over ARC?

Yes! After much head-scratching I read the manual for the sound bar again. It has an LED which changes colour to indicate what sort of audio it's decoding.

I now get an orange light for the audio from the ARC, which I didn't get before. Like a muppet I was expecting to see a blue light, but Dolby 5.1 doesn't qualify for blue according to the manual. Thanks for the tip about the telly, it was doing my head in.
