No-one seems to have mentioned LG plasma screens, any reason for that?

I love my 50" LG plasma, looks fantastic smile
Purely because if you wanted the best, you bought a Pioneer or a Panasonic, and the people who actually care enough to dislike the look of an LCD also cared enough to spend the extra for the best.
Well that's me told!

Although actually I probably disprove that theory because I bought plasma because I didn't like LCD yet I have an LG smile

Obviously it's not a hard and fast rule, on AVF most Plasma owners had one of those two.

Yeah, but they take it all just that bit too seriously smile

I liked the LG plasmas.

Some of the later ones were very, very good, allowing you to adjust the drive of the panel, proper greyscale and CMS controls in the menus that you could lock down once calibrated.
They went brighter than the Panasonics and were cleaner and sharper than the Pioneers.

The £1000-1500 LG was arguably better than the same price point Panny, but they sort of stopped at that level, if they had made a £2-2500 LG I think it would have sold really well and been very highly thought of.

This is the sort of scene that Plasma and OLED do so, so much better than LCD...

The ability to show absolute black next to bright whites with no bleeding can't be underestimated, this is what gives a screen depth and pop to the image. I had a Sony LCD with local backlight dimming and that was the best LCD I had every played with and even that just couldn't do the scene above properly.

Considering you can pick up a 2015 OLED for well under a grand now I don't see why anyone with the slightest interest in this gear would buy an LCD now.
I have the Sony W905 in our conservatory, I also have an old panny 720 commercial panel that is 10 years old and in many ways the 10 year old plasma is the nicer to watch, no matter what the ambient light levels are in the room it simply performs, set it up for one input and that is it, no more adjusting the picture, doesn't matter if it is bright sunlight, pitch black room, the picture is just spot on. On LCD I tend to have to have different picture settings for daytime, nighttime film watching etc. It is a pain in the arse.

This is the old 720p Panny....

I love my Panasonic plasma ... but I must confess to something: I wanted a 65 inch for another room and didn't want to pay a lot. My first post was in reference to this new set. It's a Hisense 65M5500. I'd read that 'for the money' it's great. So I took the plunge.

Link: http://m.richersounds.com/#!/product/hise-65m5500

Hooking it up a few days ago; I was gutted and felt almost cheated. However, I found some recommended settings online and have used these new settings and I must say, I am now won over. The set can be had (or could be) for £703 from AO.com.

I just wanted to report back and to balance my initial disgust with an evolved perspective. It's a 4K set and the upscaling is pretty damn good; even SD footage is fine; the menu and smart options are very intuitive and a joy to use. It does have the odd struggle, seemingly, with manic footage but again, FOR THE MONEY, it's a good set and I take back my initial dismay at, what is basically a budget set.

Having said all of this, for me; plasma still wins. But if anyone is after a 65 inch screen; take a look at the Hisense range; Chinese sets; well made and with great menus; attempting to crack the western markets; sponsoring Red Bull F1 and the Euro's etc etc. I think they offer a good budget option. Read up more on AVforums and the like.

Evening I have or should I say had a TX-P42G20 until my three year old (almost) son launched something at it this morning. Massive crack in the screen and it simply goes to standbye. Insurance company say it cannot be repaired economically and have now offered me a TX40DX700B from Panasonic, 2 inches smaller and LCD.....apparently it's better.

Anyway that will cost me £100 excess so should I find a secondhand version of what I have/had saw one for £149 on gumtree but it's now sold.

What about this?

https://www.gumtree.com/p/televisions-plasma-lcd-t...

What does the 30 at the end signify? New better model than mine.

Or this?
https://www.gumtree.com/p/televisions-plasma-lcd-t...

Seems plenty of people want a bigger worst quality screen.

I got mine from Digital Direct was that owned by a PH'er Deristrictor?

Any advice taken?

G30 is a year newer than your current one, GT is the next model up from the G.

The 30 series did have some issues with screen uniformity/clouding.

Which left colour uniformity issues, noticeable on large areas of the same colour and a nightmare with sport.

This was my VT30, it was left on a long exposure to make it show up more, but it shows the issue...

It was a £700 set, ask for cash in lieu imho and see what they offer.

Loewe have just announced they are entering the OLED market.

I am going to go with the 55" of that, stunning sets Loewe are and something I know I can keep for years.

Plus they have 5.1 DD+ decoders built in so you can attach active speakers and subs etc.

Take it unless you can find someone who wants to buy the TV for more.

My Panasonic warranty could only offer me an LCD replacement when my G10, I begrudgingly took it as they wouldn't offer me cash, so I'm now just waiting out on OLED.

What would you buy with the £437? Apart from a second hand plasma? They are saying I can pay extra on top to upgrade, what's the cheapest OLED?

That settlement figure seems a bit low, can you remember what it cost you? My 42G10 was £900, theyre supposed to offer something equivalent, a £530 lcd isnt in my opinion.

The offer was via BEValue, as I said I got the screen from Simon I think via here for about £650 in Nov 2010. I told them the 40 inch was not big enough, I may well point out the screen quality but on paper they think the new "ultra 4K......." Is better.

Counter offer tomorrow, off on holiday so no real rush.

Someone has a 42G30 on eBay for £750!

Offering you a smaller screen than you have is grounds for rejection straight up, I would have thought.

Cheers, that what I will be saying to them again today.

Having had a look there are quite a few 2nd hand 42/50 inch Panny plasma's from 2011 onwards for £200 so assuming they are in good condition that may be the way to go. I don't fancy paying the difference to get a OLCD (or whatever those new ones are).
