The LG is HDR but not Dolby Vision apparently

I'm hoping by the time that matters I will probably replace the TV anyway..................

Given all my 4K content will be watched from Sky Q and/or streamed from t'internet, do you think that will be an issue for me?

Having read about Dolby, it seems as if DV is only really a consideration if you plan to use a 4K player?

Don't let DV sway your decision too much - most of the big manufacturers have already stated they have no interest in supporting it and the standards are still being discussed.

If you can get them to demo the Panasonic alongside the LG ask them to play the same footage and take your pick.

I'm hoping I can resist an OLED for another year, as my TV is only 3 years old.

Trouble is, I keep looking at them and now they're dropping into figures starting with a 2 it's getting harder frown

Once a 55" OLED with HDR is sub £2k, that'll be it for me I reckon.

I thought that originally about the 65" one, but it is HDR but not Dolby Vision

The 65" at £3k is cheap, but the 55" at £1.7k is a bargain, but be quick, the 65"s were selling fast and I don't think there will be any more once these ones are gone.

Long awaited firmware update recently gave HDR via Netflix app from TV to add to the three HDMI HDR-capable inputs on the 55/65 EF950 models.

Yep, but it needs more work I suspect, Netflix or LG need to sort it.

HDMI are all 2.0a I believe.

If you can find one. I went to buy last night and there's now none left in any of the stores within a 10 mile radius of me. I'm a firm believer that things are meant to be, so I'm taking it as a sign that I need to wait for the new gens to drop in price, or I should get the Panny.

When I was looking for the 65" one, I searched on the Currys website and kept extending the radius, ended up buying one about 50 miles away from me!

The Panny is by far the best LED out there. It wipes the floor with the Sony. The white haze you see around the objects on the Sony, is certainly not as prevalent on the Panny, but then again the Panny still isn't anywhere near as good as the OLED blacks. The stand for the Panny is also awkward, it spans the entire width of teh set, so if you're not wlal mounting the stand needs to be uber wide.

My problem is I love the picture from the OLED. I remember seeing the 960V when it first came out and I fell in love with the picture saying my next TV would 100% be OLED. I am not a big TV viewer, but when we watch a film/Sport it's on the TV and I want it to be in the best possible quality. I'm a bit anal when it comes to getting the best possible thing for the money. I paid £2100 for my 46" back in the day, so I'm not adverse to spending, but sadly these flagship OLED panels are a step too far for me at £3k+, and deep down I don't want to compromise on an old model that isn't going to last me another 8-10 years.

Anyone considering an LG really should see if they can get a discount through their VIP scheme via their workplace.

The one I'd currently get (should my Pioneer ever die) would be OLED55E6V. Direct from LG is £2450 which does seem cheaper than anywhere else I've found.

How are OLEDs these days for lifespan and burn-in?

Recent article says 100,000 hours.

No dea on burn in. It does pop up a screen saver on the menus.

And the viewing angle is all the way.

Cheers for that, like you I'm not a big TV watcher but I like the best of everything so splashed out £2,700 on the 65EF950V. I've never spent more than a few hundred quid on a TV and felt a bit sick after the spend but it's going in the wall in my home office/snug and it will look epic within the built in furniture designed for it. In selfridges the image quality just plain blew me away when viewed alongside non-OLED panels and as it was reduced from £5k originally, it seemed a good buy.

I won't be watching on it for a few months but I'll try and report back when I do.

Cheers

JC

I was at the Natural History Museum last week and they had LG OLEDs in one of their special exhibition sections (all about Vision / Eyes, hence the link). The screens were rotating several pages of text/diagrams (mostly white text and greyscale diagrams on black background) and the burn-in was really bad. I don't know how long they've been running but if you found out the start of the exhibition I'm sure you could work it out. It was so bad both my wife and I noticed and commented on it... when a new page came up you struggled to read the text because the burn-in from the previous page was still prominent in fading grey making the new text difficult to make out.

Granted this is possibly the worst use case you can think of, but I wondered if LG regretted putting little plaques under each TV boasting of the performance when the display was so heavily compromised.

Interesting that there is a art display model in the 2016 line up.
