Want to setup a projector viewing room for films. Have a room 4.8 m wide and 9.9 m long and 2.65 m high. At the “screen” end in the corners are two columns reducing the max screen width to about 4m. I plan to position loudspeakers in front of the two columns.

I would plan to hang the projector from the ceiling. Cable access is not a problem. The room has motorised external blinds so light is not a problem.

Given that I could have a picture theoretically 4 m wide what would be the recommended projector distance from the screen, front row distance from the screen and what models up to say a budget between 500 and 1000 would anyone recommend. Thanks for any help as I have never tried to set up something like this before.

You'll need a projector throw distance calculator, and to know the throw ratios of whichever projector you use. They have a range as most can zoom in/out, so you have some latitude. A quick check hasn't really found any good calculators, I'm sure there are some though as I used one. This will give you an idea:

As for PJ's, well, it's personal but I like Epson PJ's, I just like the image the LCD based ones creates. You could get a EHTW6600 for your budget. Having said that 180inch (4m wide) screen is really big, a budget PJ will struggle a bit but the Epson's are relativly bright so I think that's your best bet at that price point. Epson are just re-vamping their line up so it'd be well worth you waiting and seeing, either you'll find a better model at the same price or the older ones cheaper, the new Epson's come with a 4k enhancement technology which, while not actually 4k, will make the image look denser, especially helpful on larger screens.

If you can stretch the budget a bit the Sony VPLW45ES uses a slightly different technology (reflective LCD) to make pictures with much better black levels/contrast. It's about £1850.

It really depends on the performance you want from the projector.

I like the sony's for both thier brightness and their specification. The 320, 550 and 1100 are all true 4K projectors and stunning.

The 45's and 65's still get very good write ups for 1080p images.

Other to look are are

JVC for thier psudeo 4K image and excellent blacks.
Epsom for thier 1080p range and budget.

As you don't have a light control issue, you dont need to think to much about the gain of the screen to help the image brightness, unless you go to the lower end of the budget on your projector.
