I'm thinking of getting some bose over head noise cancelling headphones for my commute and to use at work. Am I asking to get robbed?

I know there about £250+ which is why I'm wondering if I should or not. I get a bus and a 20 minute walk through leeds city centre so it's not too bad but not too sure really!

Why not get a set of in ear sound isolation buds instead

I'm a sound engineer and you don't need to spend BOSE money.

Thanks for this! I'll have a read! I've got some in ear headphones at the minute but with my phone due an upgrade soon and the thought of getting an Iphone 7 means i might look at getting wireless headphones which is why i was looking at bose.

I don't think those audio clips are and accurate. Representation of noise cancelling at all. Maybe they would be if shure made NC headphones. :-)

I have some RHA 450i earphones and they are fantastic. Really good, just a shame the volume control doesn't work on Android devices.

I have some Bose quiet comfort headphones which I use when flying, I also have some IEMs which I use for commuting and I'd say they do 95% the same job and the IEMs take up far less space. I'm on my second pair of these and they are really good.

Thanks for the replies but the problem with wired is that being an iphone fan and will probably upgrade soon i'd like bluetooth instead of having to use the stupid adaptor that comes with it.

Hi - appreciate preference of BT over using the adapter - but TBH it's not too bad (if you already have good headphones (in no way am I an audiophile so purely my opinion)) I've got a set of Klipsch in ear (s6i's I think) and also Bose QC25's (40th Birthday present from the wife ..... ;-) ) Got the iPhone 7 Plus, and using the adapter is fine - But yet - as/when the headphones give up the ghost will likely swap to BT.

For what it's worth, I recently replaced a pair of flashier looking Sony Bluetooth headphones (black and red) with a pair of all black Bose Quiet Comfort 35.

For over 3 years, I wore the Sonys through the centre of town and then through a notoriously dodgy industrial part of the city. Never had any problems and the Bose are even less conspicuous than the Sonys. All the cool kids and street urchins want Beats!

Never heard of anybody being robbed for their headphones but I would say Bose are the Rolex of the headphone world, that is to say they are recognizable by 99% of the population as an expensive item so could well attract some unwanted attention.

Wear Grados and everybody will think they were bought from a car boot for £2.50. hehe

I use Shure SE-425 in-ear headphones for my commute (by bicycle) and for general wandering about headphones use. They are excellent as they keep the world at bay whilst leaving just enough peripheral hearing to stop being run over by a bus or rampaging elephant. The sound quality is superb and they are extremely comfortable. You might find, listening to them that the sound is a bit flat - that's because they are essentially mini-monitors (like musicians use on stage etc) and thus don't overboost the bass like many headphones do, especially ones marketed towards teenagers (e.g. Dr Dre)

For running, I use a pair of JVC bluetooth in-ear 'phones because cables suck and I just need accompaniment, not too worried about sound quality. Have to be charged every few hours from a USB socket.

For flying I have some Bose QC25s. They are excellent at keeping the aeroplane din away and sound pretty good when switched on, should you run out of power, they are horrendous though. They are also large and hot and wouldn't be my first choice for commuting. I have used them at work though when the building noise from our new building has been excruciating and they've been great there.

From my experience, something small, unobtrusive, well-designed and non-powered is the best for commuting as the headphones will live in your bag/pocket and relying on power for your "personal space" (as it were) could get irritating. The Shure 'phones come with a variety of foam and rubber inserts to fit different ears and to optimise how much 'outside' you want to hear, sound great, weigh next to nothing and would be my suggestion. The cheaper versions are also very good, sound isolation-wise, they just tend to have a smaller range of frequency response (which is probably academic given the digital source material). The JVC Bluetooth ones would be pretty good though if you wanted to go wireless. It's still steer clear of large speakers for commuting but that's just me smile
