Looking some advice/guidance if possible - we have a communal Sky system in our road which has allegedly been upgraded to support Sky Q and I have my installation booked for next week. Trouble is, a neighbour had theirs installed earlier this week and ended up needing a dedicated dish as 'the signal was too weak or Sky Q'.

My understanding is that they would have had to have installed a hybrid LNB in order to support Sky Q and the older Sky+ HD boxes on the same system - my old box still works fine after the dish was 'upgraded'. Interestingly, the neighbour is the one with the communal dish attached to their house so you wouldn't expect there to be a signal strength issue for them!

So is it likely that the dish hasn't been upgraded at all (I phoned the company concerned and they say it has) and I'll need my own (likely extra cost) or can I buy some form of in-lime amplifier to boost the signal? Or will it likely just work?

Apologies for the rambling first post on PH!

The people that sort out the communal system need to fit a switch. There will be no dish or LNB changes ordinarily.

If it doesn't provide a proper signal, then get them back in to fix it.

Sorry - we do have at least one multi switch (possibly two), I understand something was done with these as well.

Did they not need to change the LNB then?

Switch - yes, LNB - no.

Interesting - thanks! I'm reliably informed (by the wife) that the switch for the first phase of houses was definitely upgraded, our switch seemingly runs off this one and was most likely not changed. It also turns out that the neighbour with the weak signal apparently gets their feed direct from the communal dish which might explain their problem.

So we may be in a position where half the street can get Sky Q while the rest of us either wait for the second phase switch to be replaced or have our own dishes......which we're not supposed to do!

All the communal feeds will be via a switch. With the right type of switch Sky Q can work.

ThanksMagic, all becoming clearer now. Forgive my ignorance but would have a switch installed downstream of the dSCR headend unit that was upgraded or would it be some form of passive device and therefore work regardless?

For clarity, the active hardware was installed prior to our phase of house being built so the remaining 10 or so properties run off second box connected the the headend. Hope this makes sense, appreciate the help!

The dSCR headend is the bit that contains the switch. The only thing downstream of that should be the Sky box.

In that case I'm not hopeful for next week as we get our feed from a different passive unit under a manhole cover(same dish though) - don't think they touched this....

Can always live in hope I guess!

Between Sky and the A/V people that look after the communal system they should be able to sort it.

Without a clear idea of the current set up it's hard to say how it will go on the day. Hopefully it'll just work!

So.....as suspected it didn't work. Apparently the installers have put in a Q compatible LNB but not connected any of us to it! So it looks as though we have separate systems (LNBs) for Sky+ and Q now and need the installers to move us over us from one to the other when anybody wants Sky Q. Trouble is Sky won't come out again until we're connected to the Q feed at which point Sky+ will stop working until we can get an engineer out again.....

Nice of them to tell us!
