Hmm. The box was opened already, seal was cut.
Mine too, but I'm not sure that's the reason discs are missing...

Only the Martian at the moment. Wow.

That is all.

No, it is not, Wow. Again.

Now I see how bad netflix/LG buggered up HDR on the 950.

I wonder if the "cleaner, starker whites" of LCD screens in this review is the same thing as when I commented on the OLED whites looking like dirty snow?

The whites looked darn good in the 4k disk version of Everest! Also, I actually squinted when it shown the sun, it was so bright! That's never happened before.

Not seen any issues with whites.

Other topic. Without having a great selection available, The Martian 4K is a feast for the eyes on the Samsung player. Popped the Hobbit in (3D 1080p) and it seems to cope quite well however one or two parts of the screen were not quite right. Need to go back and check that as the old Panasonic 720 player was flawless however this was on another disk. Need to pop in a few more 1080p for comparison and see what it makes of a SD film.

However I am still playing with the settings, not sure I should be up converting at the player or let the TV sort that for non UHD, that sort of thing. Some experimenting needs to be done. On balance, and without seeing the opposition, a good buy at this moment in time.

Now I need more disks.

Was that on an OLED? Or you talking about LCD?

You can alter the colour temperature of a screen in inject some/more blue into 'whites' which will make them appaear cleaner/brighter, but the film will be graded to D65 so anything else is technically incorrect. I wonder if that's what you were seeing...

After weeks of research and looking for a 65 inch with active 3D during Black Friday I ended up with the

Sony 65S8005C 3D Curved screen 4K 65-inch Ultra HD TV (Android TV, 4K Processor, 4K X-Reality Pro, Motionflow XR 800 Hz, Wi-Fi and NFC) - Black [Energy Class A]

for a Grand. I have to say the picture quality is amazing once calibrated. Watching Everest in 4K is an absolute joy. More than happy, and no regrets for not paying double for a mere 55 inch equivalent OLED.

And I'm not buying into this HDR with 10 bit 1 Billion colour nonsense. I'm more than happy with my 8 bit 16.8 million. I'm sure I'll get by.

The Martian UHD Blu-Ray has been upscaled as the movie's digital intermediate was 2k, so it's still not as good as it gets.

Lots of good reviews around for The Revenant in UHD, so I think that may be our Saturday night viewing, as long as I can get the 5.1 audio all wired up in time and figured out the best way to connect everything through the amp.

Happy days. Already been chucking loot at a few, but better check the source material first.

5.1 Audio all set up. 'The Revenant' in the UHD player. Just got to make some salted caramel popcorn and we're all set.

One thing I wasn't sure about was whether deep color should be enabled on my LG B6. It detects the player and turns it on automatically, even though deep color is disabled in the 8500. Anyone know what's best for using these two together?

I wouldn't call HDR a nonsense. Probably the biggest advance in image quality since the jump from SD to HD.

I wish that it wasn't part of the 4K spec myself, I would be happy with a 1080p set that does HDR in a 50" screen.

We are going to start seeing HDR broadcasts come in at a fair old rate over the next 12-18 months. They will start to use it more to make everything seem more lifelike rather than to show off what it is capable of too.
HDR done well is truly, truly breathtaking, never have images looked so lifelike on screen before, it is graduation between colours where HDR excels, not the amount of colours it can cover. This is what makes someones face look like you are watching them through a window rather than on a screen, we have never been able to get such realistic images on screen before HDR.

But I don't think buying something now just for HDR is really worth it, unless you buy lots of HDR discs of course, like you say, a grand for a stunning set now is a great buy, sell it in 2 years for £500 and buy a new one for a grand when prices are down that does the lot, when we actually have the content, still cheaper than paying £2k for the HDR version now.

As far as I know deep colour isn't necessary for UHD although some TVs need it 'on' to activate HDR. Here"s a link to other tips for the 8500:
