50fps in p I think for UHD?
The trouble is most TVs are displayed with a specially filmed. gorgeous 4k video which doesn't really give you an idea of how its going to be when you plug the Sky box in at home.
As I'm sold on OLED as a technology I'll just deal with it good or bad.

I bought it knowing there is a gap from over the aerial SD through top UHD Bluray (and then I had not considered the source material for the latter but that plays in). The upscaling is superb however SD is SD no matter how you try to polish it, the info just aint there to start with. Aerial HD is just fine for casual viewing. I have found I have stopped watching SD. Blurays 1080p are great with this as they should be. However I have many years worth of SD DVD....... damn damn damn......

I am steadily replacing all of my favorite SD DVD's with BR or 4k HDR BR discs. (I even just bought Game of Thrones series 1-6 on BR to replace my DVD's). A lot of the standard BR discs are now so cheap (GoT wasn't..), it's a no brainer if you have a decent TV and BR player. We have been putting the replaced DVD's on EBay, which see to sell.

My tv has decided to have a huge shadow across the screen since I switched it on yesterday. Is only 3 years old - LG 47LA790W-ZA - and still in the 5 year warranty from John Lewis. Unfortunately both the TV and I are now abroad, and the warranty won't cover it to Dubai. So that looks like new TV time, and a chance to get a new one.

I do like LGs and have a few throughout the house, and despite this issue, would be happy to buy again. Everything I have read so far suggests the OLEDE6 is the best reasonably priced TV out there. I can see it is £2499 in John Lewis, but here it is £3000. Question is do I need it?

Here in Dubai I have a BR-DVD, an HD internet provided service I watch football through (DU), and some downloaded HD content. So do I need it? Or shall I look at a super UHD or standard UHD TV?

I like the idea of getting the HDR / Dolby Vision capability, but realistically is a TV going to last that long before it breaks, and the content is available whilst I am here ? My other concern is will I be able to alter the smart services if i purchase here in Dubai, and return to UK (like I-player, 4OD etc).

I think I am probably answering my own question here, namely that due to lack of content here in the region the E6 is not needed here. So what is best I should look for over here ? This is the largest retailer here :-

https://uae.sharafdg.com/home-entertainment/tv/?q=...

What would you pick in my situatiom ? (55" would be screensize).

If the attached 'sound bar' doesn't bother you then I'd still go for the E6 - even BR benefits from the true blacks and the E and G series are reputedly hand picked from the production line.

I bought a C6 a few weeks ago. Considering I was initially thinking of a cheap ~£500 50" 4k TV, and ended up spending almost £3k on a 65" OLED, common sense should have kicked in by now and made me realise it was an unnecessary frivolous purchase. However, it is fabulous - the picture is stunning and impresses me each time I use it. In fact, it's so good I bought a 4k BR player today to get the best out of it which is something I never thought I'd do.

The sound bar does not bother me, but I won't use it as I run everything through my Onkyo AV and surround sound. I think it is down to these two choices:-

https://uae.sharafdg.com/detail/index/sArticle/212...

https://uae.sharafdg.com/detail/index/sArticle/230...

Approx £1200 for first one and £3300 for second one. With options open to me for content, will I see £2100 better quality in the second option ?

One more thing (possibly) to consider - I'm only sitting approx 2.5m from TV.

If you won't use it, can you not get the B6 instead?

When I was looking, I'd heard OLED was the way to go, but when I compared Samsung next to LG next to each other running their own demos, I was really impressed with the Samsung. At that point, it was above the LG in my opinion.

However, I then took my own content in and compared that - HD and UHD trailers. The LG looked far superior - the Samsung looked flat and lifeless in comparison.

I have no regrets about spending the extra.

Those two displays don't even come close. Get the E6.

If you want to save money you could go with the Sony 55XD93 (XD9305 in uk) which is a local dimming display, and also the Pansonic 58DX902 which is a local dimming led with the zones behind the screen. Considered the best LCDs out right now by many (Sony ZD9 is best but 65" is the smallest and £4000, so pointless imho).

However, a few guys who had the 910 and 930 1080 LG OLEDs have swapped for the Panasonic after the glowing reviews, but have since sold them on again and kept their 1080 OLEDs.

Sony has announced and OLED for next year, retail price of $1999 for the 55" and $2999 for the 65". The XD93 retails at $1600 for the 55" in the States as a comparison (£1500 here).
So very keen pricing.

Why mention that? It might be worth considering a 2015 1080p OLED, can be had for around £1000 here, run it for 18 months and then swap over for a 4k HDR set when we have lots of content and when the prices have fallen.
There will be 55" 4k OLEDs at under £1500 within a year, maybe as low as £1200.

The 55E6 can be had for £2250 delivered here now from Crampton & Moore if you mention their twitter offer, and Richer Sounds will match it.
I think we will see the B6 at £1500 after Xmas, and it will be £1200 when the B7 is about to launch which will probably be March/April.

I've had the 55 inch LG OLED since Thursday.

OMG it is good. It's fking good. It's so good I feel like I've been wasting my life before this and not just with TVs, in general. I think I could stay home for a month and just watch TV. It's so good I think if a nymphomaniac invaded my lounge room, I'd maybe just do a quick one, in front of the TV, then boot her out and go back to watching TV again.

I've hardly even put any 4K on it, it has almost all been just HD, but it is still stunningly good.

The only thing I'm now thinking is maybe I should have coughed another £800 for the 65 inch version.

Doesn't look like any of those models available here in UAE. All sold out. (We get very limited stock here - and as new is always best - means lots and lots of new models (e.g. I'd be surprised if you can still buy an iPhone 6 here).

When you said the displays don't come close. I assume you meant they don't compare? i.e. The second one (E6) is leagues above the first?

I am also inclined to agree with get a TV to last me for two years and replace. Problem is the OLED are not low enough here to make it feasible - there is no B6 model here. Just E or G. Hence my thought was go with the HDR and see what that is like !

Bought the 65" OLED LG Signature which arrives this week.
I made a template out of paper to test how it would look in the room and its flipping huge.
Seriously had doubts and thought the 55" might be a more tasteful choice.
But Mrs said that we'd soon get used to it! Didn't see that one coming.

The E6 could be a set that lasts you 6+ years no problem.

I wouldn't even entertain the first one, the LCD.

I did the same.

Now I think we should have gone for the 65".

You compare it to the current telly and it looks too big, then when you've got it you realise it's not too big at all.

You have an unusually forward-thinking Mrs.

Oppo 4K player looks to have hit the street now, and at a silly price. I say silly, might be reasonable for the kit but silly for me.

So at the risk of being branded a heathen, and going against the advice in the forum and the general consensus of others that have had a similar quandary on where to go from a TV perspective I went for the 850 LED over the E6. I went and looked at them both last night, and I just could not justify an extra £2000+ for the OLED E6. I could see the picture was better on the E6 - no questions there - but for the content I watch, £2000+ additional cost was not justifiable. The 850 is still better than what it's replacing, and if/when I return to UK and the OLED's have decreased in price, I'll take another look then at upgrading.

I did note the comment the E6 will still be in use in 6 years - but that is only if it lasts that long! With 1 year guarantees only on offer on purchases here it is another risk to consider.

I also did find the Sony X93D for sale that was mentioned - but it was another £400 over the LG and I couldn't see the extra £400 of value there. Also the shop it was in, is not as reputable as the shop I bought from.

In the same way as I have looked at 911's recently, yet still drive a truck, my requirements meant that it was just not justifiable. If the B6 had been an option over here, and for UK prices, I could have made the man maths work.

Hopefully I won't regret my decision. I don't think I will unless I watch tv at someone else's house over here and compare - and that's not likely to happen!

Your choice..
I got mine just before the current new ones came out so the prices were a lot lower.

I think the £400 for the Sony would have been money well spent.

To be fair it is one of the only LCDs I could live with.

But your choice and unless you see what you are missing you will never know anyway. wink

I was thinking of upgrading to a nice 60-65" LCD panel, but I'm now thinking that I should wait another year or so for 60-65" OLED prices to drop a little bit towards an acceptable level (£1500 ish). Can anyone think of any reason not to wait? I only care about picture quality and supposedly OLED is the way to go.
