I've never missed heroin but I imagine I'd not feel the same after having some.
Great analogy!Funk said:
Will it isn't really... I've seen the B6 and XD93 next to each other in the same place with the same source... In your analogy I tried the freebie but wasn't hooked.
To be fair, until you have seen a set at home in your room under normal lighting and calibrated properly you really can't tell which one is best, it is only when you set them up properly that they start to excel. That could be either of them btw. gizlaroc said:

I'm in exactly the same situation as the OP (was?).
51" Samsung plasma currently and I'd like a 65" screen. My head says wait for OLED prices to drop and don't compromise, but every time I see a deal on a 65" LED TV I'm sorely tempted.
I'm wondering how long it'll take for 65" OLEDs to drop below the £2k mark (the most I could ever justify spending on a TV). Hopefully all the new competition will make prices more competitive, but aren't the Sony and Panasonic models just using LG panels anyway? Not to mention more 'premium' brands.
I've just been through this. Went from 55in Panasonic plasma that I loved to a Samsung 65KS9000. Deliberated over oled for months but wanted the increase in size. Couldn't justify the extra for oled.51" Samsung plasma currently and I'd like a 65" screen. Absolutely delighted with the Samsung. Set up according to avforums guidelines with a few personal tweaks every guest I've had has been blown away by the 4K picture

That gives me some encouragement... can I ask what model your Panny was, or more to the point how old?Absolutely delighted with the Samsung. Set up according to avforums guidelines with a few personal tweaks every guest I've had has been blown away by the 4K picture
Sitting as far away from the screen as I do (hence the want for as big a screen as possible within budget), I'm more excited about the prospect of HDR than 4K

I keep reading this stuff. However, I sit 18ft away from my 65" 1080P telly I can't help thinking I'll gain little from going 4k.I've got a 43" Philips 4k screen in my office and I struggle to see the real benefit there and I sit just 8ft away from it!

The key word in your original statement was missed: you can't really miss what you never had...But let's not dwell on semantics - you got a nice, big screen for a price you couldn't have had a comparable OLED for and without the wait for prices to drop

The LG is a great screen, I just didn't feel it justified the extra money.

Had the LG OLED 2 months now. Summary:
Movies - stunning
Everyday TV/news etc - I suspect a nice LCD might be better. Skin tones look not quite right.
What profile are you using? Skin tones are just wrong with the default "eco", and "standard" modes.Movies - stunning

Cinema and Expert modes are better. There are several Youtube videos that show how to set it up; I went with Darko's guide.
.
Holy crap. Just got Planet Earth II in the post. This must be a goto 4K.
Absolutely amazing.

Skin tones was probably the thing I had most issue with when I got my LG OLED. Often looked a bit red (on ISF day / night modes). I ended up moving from warm 2 to warm 1 with an increased colour setting and it's much better with no negatives that I've seen.Movies - stunning

Moved from a 46" Samsung ES8000 to the LG 55OLEDB6V
I simply can't believe how much of an improvement it is. I realise the ES8000 was getting on for 5 years old before it finally gave up on me, but how technology has moved on!
Richer Sounds "flash" sale including the SH7 soundbar for £1700 and 6 year warranty.
Very happy!

Re. skin tones, the OLEDs push green far, far too much, most of the sets I have calibrated have had the green high (2 point adjustment in white balance) anywhere from -12 to -25!
Blue is often far too high as well, my set is -14 green high and -12 blue high and red is +2.
That is starting from Warm 2 btw.

Just out of interest, are two identical tellys calibrated the same out of the box or are there variances between each unit?Blue is often far too high as well, my set is -14 green high and -12 blue high and red is +2.

There will always be panel variation, it's the great struggle of the industry really. I believe it's one thing that differentiates the different models, as you go up the range they in theory use the same panel, but have stricter QC. Fairly sure Panasonic used to do this with their Plasma's and wouldn't surprise me if LG do it with their OLEDs.Gassing Station | Home Cinema & Hi-Fi | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
