Bought a new Samsung TV, and the only audio output is an optical source. Have got a DAC and plugged into the amp. Went into the TV settings and switched to optical out sound. Now however the volume and mute buttons dont work, and I have no remote for the amp. Do I need to turn the volume on the amp every time or is there a setting in the TV I can change? Last thing I need is too many remotes around the place, YouView is good as you only need one remote.

The digital output is usually at a fixed volume, and the mute / volume controls have no effect.

This is by design.

There may be TV sets out there that allow control of the volume through the digital output, but I'm not aware of any.

Some do, my LG 740v controls the levels however it is paired with a lg sound bar with "soundlink" feature to enable this

I think that's Bluetooth, which works slightly different I think - although I'm happy to be corrected.

You can "soundlink" both ways, I opted for hardwired purely for reliability and the optical cable was already in place

As it stands my sky remote turns both my tv and soundbar on and adjusts the volume purely via optical, hdmi (arc) will also allow this however that may not be an option

I'd guess the digital output is still at a steady level and the remote adjusts the soundbar volume at the analogue stage post decode. It may send this instruction down the digital connection though.

Found the easiest thing was to go and buy an AV amp which is a lot neater.

If you connect the AVR to your TV using the HDMI 'ARC' input then apply the appropriate settings the TV remote will control the volume of the amp and the amp should switch on and off with the TV. It might take a bit of faffing about in the AVR and TV menus to get it working properly first though, but worth it to save having to jump from one remote to another.
