If I had a Sonos soundbar with a sub and two play1 for surround sound all connected to a tele could I also use the setup to play music on without re configuring anything?

I'm not sure if the speakers have to be setup to either be one or the other.

Many thanks in advance.

No they can be both. And you could even unlink the 1's from the home theatre and just play music on those if you wanted.

I do have a follow-up question though - using the optical input that the TV is using to connect to the PlayBar - could you resend this to other Sonos components, e.g.. a Play 3 in the kitchen so you could continue following the audio even in a different room?

I suspect you can but would be nice to confirm.

You can - set the Playbar to TV and add other zones to the group

I have the Playbar + 2xPlay:1 + Sub setup for our kitchen/day-room tv. It works very well, with a high degree of domestic acceptability...

When music is being played, you can set the Play:1's to operate as surrounds in full range mode or to provide "ambient" fill in. You can also manually calibrate the volume of the Play:1's relative to the Playbar, giving you control over front/rear balance. I use mine on full range, but with the volume reduced (relative to the Playbar) by about 30%. This fills the room, but still gives a sense of correct placement if you are sat in a prime listening position.
