A word to the wise. See if you can speak with somebody in the area to make sure Virgin is not oversold. For the last year they have been selling 70mb broadband in this area....but the truth is it is about 2mb or less in the evenings.
Virgin only offer broadband at that speed if they're using the BT network, surely? Otherwise it's 50, 100 or 200mbps packages, and you can invariably choose the highest of those provided you're connected to Virgin's cable network.

I can't see any reason to use Virgin when you only have a BT line, but if you're on cable the broadband is excellent. My 200mpbs package actually runs at about 215mbps; unlike the BT line service providers, it's not 'up to', it's 'at least'.
Nope, it' fibre. Was 50 with upgrade to 70. Problem is it's oversold in this area
Virgin isn't fibre, though - it's coax cable. ETA: ah, I see they brand it 'Super Fibre' now, which is somewhat misleading!

They do offer better contention ratios on the higher packages, I believe.

Fair dos...I guess what I meant was it doesn't come through the phone line

Out of interest, is the builder offering Cat5e/Cat6 as an option?

Nope, but I'm hoping to discuss it with them before they start

I've had a couple of Virgin installs and would have had a third had my latest property purchase been in Virgin area.

For the TV side of things I have one cable come into the front room where the Tivo box was and a second one run all the way round the outside of my house and into the rear reception where the standard Virgin box was.

Unlike the Sky cabling lash up the install was super-neat (I kicked Sky out because of their and BT Openreach's utter incompetetence).

And then I had 150 Mb/s all day everyday. Happy days.

Given a choice I'd have Virgin fibre all day long. I also prefer the Tivo interface to Sky but some people seem wedded to the Sky thing. The standard Virgin box is a bit old school - I presume you could have 2 x Tivos (or more?) if you pay.

Don't know that for a fact though.

Looking at the speeds here I think "Super Fibre" is ADSL / Fibre and the "Vivid" product range is coax.
Virgin is fibre to the district (and maybe to the cabinet in the street) and coax to your house.

ADSL (BT, Sky etc) is fibre to the cabinet in the street and copper twisted pair to your house.

The bandwidth and data throughput of coax is vastly greater then copper twisted pair. ADSL is just about at the limit of the physical properties of the wires but cable has huge future potential.

Ultimately fibre to the house will be even better.

There are exceptions to the above.

Yeah, I didn't want to go into detail and explain about Docsis, cable head ends etc. etc. etc.

Suffice to say that the Virgin (internet) network is very good in most areas.

Hello Steve,

Your broadband just got even more expensive – we’ve now increased your price 3 times in the last 12 months.
Just corrected that.

Exactly what they did to me - but of course, the price increases triggered a right to terminate early. So I did, giving them about 7 weeks' notice to allow plenty of time for me to arrange an alternative. They called me within a couple of weeks and upgraded the speed to 200mbps, while cutting the price to 2/3 of what I was paying. The right people in retentions have plenty of discretion, but I had to actually give notice and wait for them to call me.

I called to complain and got a reduction post increase to less than I was paying pre-increase.
It's just a shame they have three increases in a year.

St Marys island where for many years no sky dishes allowed, but after reading a tenancy agreement which stated no sky dishes to be afixed to the building i had a side line of installing a trellis and planter with a sky dish attached to a pole that was concreted into the ground. Never removed one. I gave one free realignment as well.
