Whats your go to film if you buy a new bit of Home Theatre or tv/projector to test it out?

Have you ever returned something you thought would be great and then you put your favorite in and been underwhelmed?

Something like Avatar?

Crap film but visuals would no doubt look good as a tryout.

Batman Dark night has to be up there. It used to be The Matrix but things have moved on.

The Revenant looks incredibly good in 4k/HDR.

Only got that, The Martian and Independence Day so far (free with Samsung 4k player)... The Martian is also very nice.

PQ on SKY UHD and with streamed 4k content (Netflix/Amazon) is good, but not the same level.

IMO, 4k on it's own is not that much of a step up from 1080p. It's HDR that makes the difference.

This.

The opening scene. Epic!

Also good for testing Subwoofers!

The Revenant is definitely the best of the three given with the Samsung player. I have also found the latest X-Men to be excellent.

I think that a decent 4K disk is a bit of a step up from 1080p on my 55" TV, but agree it is the HDR that really shines. When I can afford a 4K projector, I'd expect the resolution alone to make more of a difference on my 92" screen.

Batman vs Superman for me, especially the fight scenes. The HDR is immense, as well as the Atmos soundtrack.

4k on a 92" screen should look awesome... they are still very pricey though.

That might be because a lot of 4K discs are apparently not originally 4K and have simply been upscaled from 2K. I didn't know that before the weekend, but there is a site (search for Real or fake 4K) which will tell you whether it's a real 4K film or whether it's a film that was shot in 2K and then remastered to 4K. I'm not sure if a 4K disc that is remastered from 2K should be better than an HD disc that your player / TV upscale.

There is a recent re-master of fifth element, using a 4k scan and with atmos sound that's supposed to be good on BluRay. I'm hoping for a proper 4k/HDR release soon.

Look for either a recent movie shot on 4k digital, or one shot on 70mm film and then scanned to 4k and put on a UHD BD.

There are quite a few 'remastered' movies being released on UHD BD which were shot on 35mm film or had a 2k digital intermediate, which means you might not get the best viewing experience possible.

The Revenant is a good one, as is 2001: A Space Odyssey. Avatar looks pretty good, even though it's 'only' on Blu-Ray (not 4k) ATM.

Here are a couple of good websites to give you ideas:

Thats a bugger, looks like the Atmos version is a US Import and unlike UDH Disks, it will be regionalised, so I am not sure the Sammy UHD Player will accept it.

Off to do more research.

The blu-ray is better though. Simply jaw-dropping shots of our planet.

Watched this the other night. Looks great, not as good as some of the 4k/DV content I have seen but very worthwhile.

As for film scans, 35mm film is more than capable of delivering 4k resolution if they find a good print to work from ( not 3rd+ gen). a 35mm film frame is easily capable of 8mp resolution.
