Why can't you set an alarm on a zone and set it to play the playlist/album/radio station of your choice? Or do you mean something else?
Because I'd still have to have a clock/radio. I want a replacement, not yet another device.

Sorry - I'm not getting this. What does a clock radio do that a Sonos doesn't do?

We use our bedroom Sonos players as clock radios in the morning, playing boring old BBC Radio 4 from 6.40.

I suppose it tells the time so you wouldn't have to look at your phone or whatever the Sonos App is on.

The clock part.

I have been considering getting some more Sonos speakers but the existing pricing was putting me off.

Not sure what I'm going to do about the news of a price increase.

It does pretty much everything I want it to do. Some YouTube support would be nice and as another poster mentioned, the ability to stream from a music app rather than the Sonos app.

Oh. I wear a watch, and have an iPhone, iPad and cordless landline handset (this has a permanent time display) next to the bed. And when the radio goes off it is 6.40, and after that they love to tell you the time on R4. So that might explain why I overlooked the clock aspect!

... I bought a Chromecast Audio and a pair of Q-Acoustics BT3 speakers. Predictably, sound quality was much better and cost under half what I paid for the Play 3 pair. Attaching another Chromecast Audio to my main stereo was around 10% of the cost of the Sonos Connect it replaced!
I went the same way, although never got beyond the "I Want One" stage with Sonos. However Chromecast Audio into the existing lounge system (decent studio amps, nice-ish Tannoy speakers) gave me all the functionality and better sound quality at about 3% of the price. Another couple of Chromecast Audios for elsewhere in the house and some time fiddling to make them all play in sync and I wonder just why people shell out for Sonos.

It does depends a little on being an Android user as I don't think that iPhones (or other Apple devices) play as nicely with Chromecasts.

If you are an apple fan then you could use a 3rd gen apple tv to do the same job (audio is only via optical though)

Sonos will need to up their game, everyone is doing multi room systems now,so apart from some fancy design what else do they offer?

I've got a 1 and 3, don't think they were really worth the current price, let alone more! They're very good, but not worth the money when there's alternatives.

I work in the industry too and have the (no doubt) same 'tier 1' notification.

Bluesound, anyone?

do you reckon this will be int'l or just uk (the price hike)? and potentially related to pound value?

It has been cheaper in the states for a while... and I also managed to get a play 1 cheaper from amazon.es once (incl delivery) - when the pound was stronger?

i don't need anything else just now but once work on the house is done I'd like another play 1 plus another amp at some point...

We bought several of ours from amazon.es a couple of years ago - they were WAY cheaper for some reason!
I am, however, surprised how little Sonos has developed things. Love the sound though, & do make use of the multi-room.
If they start upping prices, I would be surprised if they take more market share.....
Would love to see the tie-up with Amazon Dot so we can speak to that to change music etc....allegedly happening this year.

Ah interstting you say this! I was looking forward to this too but now I am less fussed!

I have an echo and dot - in fact I got the echo first and then got the dot as I have an old amp plus speakers and I couldn't justify paying for a connect and I wanted to play spotify through my old amp occasionally.

I found after a couple of days the novelty of using speech to the dot to choose music wore off quickly and it just was not precise enough. fine for example for 'play this artist' or 'this playlist' but that was about it...

even with the ability to use voice - 90% of the time I drive the dot with the spotify app on my phone... its just better than any voice interface for choosing music

echo in the kitchen is mainly'play this station' or we have some of the childrens playlists set up but I am now not so fussed about sonos + alexa connectivity...

I'm about to invest in a good quality soundbar, plus an Amp for some ceiling speakers. I was considering a Sonos soundbar and a Connect Amp as I already have a Play 1. I must admit to never being entirely thrilled about the sound from the Play 1 - I can't describe it very well except to say that listening to most pop music, you can't really hear any cymbals - so whatever frequency they are at doesn't come through.

I thought it might just be the cheapo Play 1 but I listened to a Sonos Soundbar recently and it was just the same. Now reconsidering whether to go for Yamaha Musiccast instead.

What are you streaming to the Sonos? Like any hifi its only as good as the music source.
It is to be fair a compromise product, well designed, neatly packaged, good app etc but it wont perform as well as a dedicated amp and matched speakers.

Maybe not as nicely, but I have been very happy with the control from iPhone/iPad using Spotify and Plex for local files.

I'd love to see Amazon Echo integration with Chromecast. I have got used to using Echos (via Bluetooth) for requesting music by voice if I am just listening to something quickly in one room. It doesn't do multiroom at all so if I could get Echo to control the Chromecasts, that would be great.

Straight from a Synology NAS, mainly 320k MP3s.
