A move to a new house will require me to change my much loved Pioneer Kuro, it's just too 'heavy' a TV for the new living room.

A 55" LG OLED appears to be the most obvious choice to replace but I think at that size the screen size will dominate the room; 49" seems to be a good compromise but aside from Samsung with their 'quantum dot' tech there appears to be a lack of HQ displays.

Have I any real options?

Is your Kuro a 50"?

The B6 OLED is actually 1cm narrower than the 50" Kuro and 2cm less in height.

The surround on the Pioneer makes not only a bigger TV, but also makes it look a hell of a lot bigger in the room.

42"

It's a handsome set but will be too big for new room, ideal excuse to upgrade, especially if LG were doing a 'wallpaper' OLED in 49".

I got the dimension of my set and cut up a box to the same size. Surprising how big you can go with this edges.

Better quality TV as on the cardboard.

I was in the same boat just over a year ago - I wanted a OLED, but no way could I get a 55" in my living room.

In the end, I bought a Samsung 48" JS9000.

It's has a much better picture overall than my previous Panasonic plasma - brighter, more colourful & sharper. BUT... it still struggles occasionally with blacks... the very bottom left of the screen is slightly cloudy on very dark scenes if I'm watching in a dark room, and it struggles with sharp brights against deep blacks - white text against a black background on end credits, for example. It's not a deal breaker for me as it impacts such a tiny percentage of my viewing.

I was at my brother-in-laws over the weekend, and watched Sky on his 55" B6 and a 4k movie on his 65" B6 (both set up correctly, and both sets I've watched stuff on previously), and the blacks are perfectly black. However, the overall picture is significantly darker - just off black, for me, is too dark. I'd still have one over an LCD, but I don't think they are perfect.

I think the problem you may have with Samsung sets is the 2016 J series use top/bottom edge lighting (vs side on J series), and I've heard a lot of people say the picture is inferior to the J's... maybe this years new models are better.

Sony are offering the new FALD backlit set in 49", XE90.

RRP is £1299 on the 49" so expect that to retail around a grand to start with.

Agreed.

I tend to have them come out of black with a 2.2 gamma and finish near the brighter half of the picture with a 2.4 gamma.

Plus the other issue is the do show up some pretty poor encoding in darker areas.

Great sets, but as you say, not perfect.
