I have just bought a new LG smart TV.

In the instructions it states you can record from the program guide onto an external storage device.

I have put a 128gb memory stick into the USB to record onto.

One program failed to record, another recorded 20 mins and another was patchy and unwatchable in places.

Am I better off using an external hard drive to record onto?

Or is it that the program guide is not very reliable.

I want to get rid of the freesat box i'm currently using.

Thanks

Do you know what format the memory stick has used and what is compatible with the TV? You may have reached maximum file size if FAT32 has been used.

If LG are anything like Panasonic they'll have a minimum size and device type. Flash sticks wouldn't work in mine, regardless of size (I only have access to 128GB) but a 512MB HDD (removed from PS4 wink) works perfectly.

We've got a couple of Samsung TVs that offer recording but the relevant USB sockets are labelled external HDD. Memory sticks are more for displaying stored photos / video clips etc. Try an external Hard Drive, we've never any issues using them. Probably got something to do with the large on-board write buffers they use to temporarily store data whilst its being written to the disk.

I use a Lexa Jump Drive S73 on my LG TV and it works fine, it's formatted NTFS. I ownder if yours is too slow, mine runs a test on the drive before it'll use it.

We've got an LG smart TV, and it's a bit picky about the HDD.

It wouldn't play at all with a big new Tosh USB3 drive, but is very happy to an ancient eBay caddy with an old laptop drive in it. Trial and error...

Should be fast enough.

Isn't there something about file sizes on sd cards? HD programmes are bigger than the limit (4gb?)

SD cards are only up to 4GB in total size anyway, so couldn't hold a file larger than 4GB; any 'SD' card larger than that is an SDHC card. On pen drives (like the OP is using) the size limit will be more to do with the formatting system used; 32bit systems (like FAT32, which is how most drives come) can only deal with 4GB files, FAT can only have 2GB files. NTFS supports 2TB+ volumes with massive individual file sizes, and is what the OP should be using, hence the question about FAT32 near the top.

So how do I go about formatting it for NTFS?

Do I just format it on my laptop and choose that file type?

I'm a bit of a novice to this.

Thanks

edit: I have just formatted it to NTFS so will see what happens tonight.

Yep, all smart TVs with recording seem to be notoriously picky, have had a USB 3.0 2.5" Hitachi working fine with a 2014 Samsung. Recording and pausing etc. works but any controls are pretty jerky, it's functional but none of them at least I've seen so far are a replacement for tuner/recorder boxes.
