Evening all,

I've done a bit of searching and have been confronted with, what to me, is a load of technobabble on the search results from various AV forums.

The TV is an LG LED 42" thing, about six years old so out of warranty.

I'm getting a single, what looks to be, a one pixel wide vertical line on the screen about three inches in from the right hand side of the screen edge.

It doesn't matter what the input source is, it is always there, even when any TV menus are displayed. Therefore I don't think it is anything to do with the inputs sources or interconnects and have concluded it is fault with screen itself.

It is barely noticable but is really annoying me and the obvious question is, will it be a cheap fix or should I bin it? When I bought it, it was about £700 and I think you can buy a similar or slightly better spec telly now for less than half the price.

Now for the real point of this post (for the new telly LOL)

1, Viewing distance from screen is about 2.5m or 8ft (ish) what would the optimum screen size be, some calculators indicate I'd be better off with a much larger screen (up to 65") than the current 422 but would I gain anything other than the TV dominating the room even more than it does now? Years ago the mantra was bigger telly = better but these days they are monsters

3, Is 4k worth considering or still a gimmick? I don't intend buying loads of 4k media and mainly watch via a Virgin box, Netflix and Amazon (via their box, not a stick).

What would you do? Bin it or live with the "line".

Regarding the size, I have just upgraded my 6 year old 40" Sony to an Sony 55" XD9305 4k and because the frame around the outside is so much slimmer (the old one had a 2-3in band all the way round) it's not 'that' much bigger physically than you might think and it doesn't dominate the room - I also sit around 8ft from the screen.

I use a Virgin Tivo box for watching most stuff (can't wait for the MotoGP season to start on BTSport) and the picture is very very good but I also got a Panasonic DMP-UB700 4k Blu-ray player and bought a handful of 4k films and they are stunning!

Do it, you know it makes sense wink

I had this on an old Samsung TV.

Does the line disappear when you tilt the screen forward or back?

Mine was a slightly loose ribbon cable inside the TV, I removed and re-seated it and it was fine.

Thanks for the replies Gents.

I did have a go at it the other day using the most precise and scientific of methods, I hit it a few times and guess what.... it has gone !

I'm sure that is just a temporary fix though and no doubt it will soon be back.

However I now have a itch to scratch that has become more itchy as the price of 55"s has come down so I might just get a new one anyway, the current 42" is just too small LOL.

I think the room can carry a 55"

Doesn't look too bad up close...

But standing in the "Stir-fry" position it is a tad small.

This leads me back on to viewing distances and the need for 4k. I've looked at various charts online and all say that at the viewing distance the sofa (10ft or 3m) is away from the screen that I'd derive no benefit going up to 4k form 1080p so what would be the point.

I've got my eye on a few 55's at around the £500 mark which is all I can justify as what (with the line gone for now) would be an impulse purchase.

My man maths say not to bother with 4k as I'll never utilise it and spend £1k+ on one but instead to go with a 1080p which are now very cheap as they run out of stocks with 4k becomming the next big thing.

Should I wait and go 55" 4k in 6/12 months time (assumes current LG 42" lives that long)?
Should I impulse purchase a £500 55" 1080p
