Have you tried connecting it to the satellite feed?

Do you live in a flat? Maybe the sat feed needs fixing. Has it ever worked?

You need to be using the socket marked "Sat".

It should have a threaded socket like this:

And then you need a cable with plugs like this on each end:

The FreeSat box will likely have two sockets (one for each of the two tuners) but you can use one - it should work.

It just means that you won't always be able to record one program while watching another.

Looks like sky have installed a dish with a twin feed which you have connected to your box.
They have done this because
The communal dish didn't work
Or because the previous tennant wanted twin feed for the recording function.

I would follow that twin wire an see where it goes. Is there a dish on the end?

If not as the previous poster has said try a connection from the screw output on the faceplate to your box (input 1 if labelled) and try that.
The little box attached to the skirting is an aerial booster. The black cable from the socket going back out of wall probably runs off to the bedroom and would have been used probably for a sky eye.

In the freesat menu, is it showing *any* signal at all?

As said above, trace the cables back to see if you can see where they go. Are they plugged into satellite dish? Some cheeky sod might have seen the flat empty & has decided to 'procure' the satellite for their own use.
