I read somewhere that the original PlayStation, if left turned on for 48 hours, produces an amazingly good sound. Probably the usual snake oil though...
I have heard you can use them for transports. Lost_BMW said:
I still have my two box DNM Primus pre amp and separate power supply but haven't used them for years since selling the Musical Fidelity "something' (can't remember the numbers but it sounded very good; better than their Typhoon which I bought later and didn't rate) and moving to a single integrated amp, unfortunately. Would it be worth servicing to sell on?
I still listen to Wharfedale 708s which I bought nearly a quarter of a century ago as I never found a faintly affordable alternative that has as clean and sweet a treble (I hate tinniness and sibilance on vocals or 'bright' sounding strings, brass hi-hats, cymbals etc)
As I'm soon to move and it's time to revamp my equipment (+ the cabinets have neen scuffed and scratched over time so look a mess) does anyone have a recommendation for alternative amps and speakers I should listen to in the medium price range?
Try Sugden or Creek Amps on the Transistor front, it also might be Worth looking at Valves. I'd look at Audio Note, EAR/Yoshino or Audio Research if the budget can stretch. Speakers to match, Proac, Audio Note or the smaller Living Voice. Again the budget could go though the roof fairly quickly if you buy new. If you are sticking to a budget then Audio Innovations S500's with Snell or Audio Note speakers or even Impulse H6 or Lali. the S300 is a smaller lower output version but it is rare.I still listen to Wharfedale 708s which I bought nearly a quarter of a century ago as I never found a faintly affordable alternative that has as clean and sweet a treble (I hate tinniness and sibilance on vocals or 'bright' sounding strings, brass hi-hats, cymbals etc)

On the valve amp front I'm still rather chuffed with my Audion Sterling (especially after having had it supercharged with a Border Patrol valve choke regulated PSU)- and I've seen the iconic Silver Night on the 'Bay go for £720 which sounds like a total bargain. Art Audio amps would be worth a look, too. Got a pair of well used Living Voice Avatars for a grand from Definitive Audio (the makers) last year - fantastic speakers with valve amplification.
Quad 405 power amps are good value, and respond well to fettling. I'm bi-amping 2 Net Audio versions at present.
Linn Kaber speakers can be had for reasonable money, as can Keilidhs. You can then build your own active crossovers if you wish.
Don't forget the Sony Walkman Pro WMD-6C. I could never part with mine. I also love my Sony TCK-611S Dolby S tape player.
Arcam Alpha 5 CD players are also good buys and can be tuned up.
Philips CDi players are good for their transports.

Finally had a chance to sit and sift through this thread, loads of Googling to be done!
However, ebay doesn't throw up hits for lots of the stuff mentioned, what are the other good online resources for used hi-fi kit?

I still have a Sony CDP101 cd player (Weighs a ton!) and a couple of keff C60's in my shed.
I think I'll put them in my garage when it's built.
I'd be more than happy to store them for you if you are tight for space I think I'll put them in my garage when it's built.

I will soon be selling -
1 pair Kef C30
Denon TU260L Tuner
Target 5 shelf equipment rack (black)
Parents are getting rid and having an all in one 5.1 surround system. It's all my old stuff anyway, they inherited it when I upgraded.
I have a very similar tuner and I think the very same rack!1 pair Kef C30

After an enforced move back to a one room 'home' (pending divorce) it pains me but I've no room for my stuff so if anyone is interested in the classic DNM Primus pre-amp and power supply two box combo or even a pair of scruffy but excellent sounding Wharfedale 708s let me know (no point on EBay I suspect . .)
I can remember with such fondness my old Linn Sondek LP 12, DNM, Musical Fidelity P170 and 708 set up. Beautiful sound; ah, the good old days!
