Help please!

Have just bought a new tv - Panasonic TX-P42S20B and very nice it is too.

Unfortunately, my lad's Playstation3 is no longer working/connecting to it.

I had used an HDMI cable to connect it to the old telly, a fairly modern LCD Panasonic 32' and all was very simple - HDMI cable out of PS3 and into TV. That unfortunately doesn't work with the new TV and I am just getting a blank screen and no sound. Checked everything by re-connecting to the old tv and all was well. PS3 does not like any of the 3 HDMI connections on the new tv though.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Many thanks.

Have you tried plugging it all in, and then holding your finger on the 'on' switch until it beeps for a second time. That should reset the PS3's settings to whatever resolution you have.

Thanks. Yeah, I tried that but still all I got was a blank screen and no sound.

I do find it strange that it works perfectly in the other TV. Think I'll have to dig the other connectors for the PS3 out of the loft and see if I can connect it that way and play around with the settings. I'll also try connecting the DVD player using the HDMI cable to see if there is any problem with the HDMI connector on the telly.

Any other ideas would be appreciated!

Definitely get another HDMI equipped item plugged in, and see if it works.
If so, then I'm at a loss to explain why the PS3 is having a hard time.
Have you tried the other HDMI inputs, and more importantly, did you choose the correct HDMI input with the remote?

Same TV as me! Very nice it is.

Like most technology, HDMI is over-complicated and there's a lot of handshaking and communication between devices to find a mutually acceptable picture and sound format, I think. So, try fiddling around with settings in the PS3 (sorry don't know about PS3s). Oh, and turn off viera-link (in your telly menu), I found it caused a whole bunch of problems.

I did try each of the 3 hdmi ports in the tv and selected the correct one on the remote. Will ensure viera link is switched off and try again when I get home.
Thanks for the suggestions.

All fixed!
Dug out the other connectors for the ps3 and plugged the White, red and yellow cables into av3 on the side of the tv. Turned the ps3 on and it came on screen automatically on hdmi 1with a prompt screen noting hdmi connection available and asking if I wanted to use the hdmi connection.
Why using the other connectors triggered this will remain a mystery to me!
Unplugged the av3 leads and it still works fine.
Thanks again.

Sounds like a failsafe feature - use the basic connection with a defaulted SD resolution, then accept the higher HD resolution and connection.

My Pioneer was the same - you had to enable the HDMI ports in a menu before you could use them.

With the PS3 in standby hold down the power button until it beeps a few times, this resets the display settings and it will then prompt you to go through the display setup again. There shouldn't be a need to connect an AV lead if you do the reset properly (from standby and hold it long enough)
