They're universally crap, unquestionably, however they do work for some people.

50V20 is the best television on the market today, uses the very best Panasonic film and the Kuro processing engine out of the Pioneers with some tweaks.

However, for similar money, the 56" 21:9 Philips LCD is a fine choice, best LCD theres ever been.

One for Plotloss - buying a new TV for the old man but his budget won't quite stretch to the 50V20. Is the 50G20 value for money at ~£950?

Thanks,

Onz smile

Very much so, in a 50", only outclassed by the V series.

I was informed yesterday that the V series is no longer in production, with the gap being filled by the VT (3D) variant. He may of course have told me that to either a) make me spend more or b) put me into the G series that he had in stock.

Anyway, SWMBO has now decided that she likes the "sharpness" of the LED as opposed to the "depth" of the plasma.

So, the 55" Samsung 8000 series is on the cards, because "she likes their phones", rolleyes but I have a contact at Phillips, so may look at the 56" recommended by Plotloss. I assume I am looking at the Philips 56PFL9954?

Whats the biggest difference between LED and LCD though, in viewing terms?

The V is still there, the VT is 3D and not a stop gap. Were you told this by a cretin in a shed (Comet/Currys etc)?

LED refers to the backlighting, it's still an LCD set. It just uses LED instead of Fluros

Samsung crap, swerve.

Yes - to be fair to him out of the two or three I spoke to he had at least some inkling of what he was talking about. He intimated that the V was no longer in production and the VT was superceeding (sp?) because of the 3d stuff.

Is that the right Phillips model number?

Samsung I really wish to avoid, just trying to figure out how to do it because she is using her bonus for it!!!

Plotloss: What TV would you recommend over 50 inches. Is the Panasonic 65 inch 3D tv any good? Or does it sacrifice quality because of it's size?
Do you think 3D tvs will drop in price rapidly over the next few months?
Thanks

My Sony 40" is certainly a LOT better than my parents 40" Samsung which looks awful IMO.

65VT20 is awesome.

When we move down the pyramid, prices will fall but that's a feature of all technology not just 3DTV

LG are generally superior to Samsung across the range.

Sony are superior to Samsung as despite using Samsungs film they use their own processing electronics and chassis design.

Just had a look at the Philips 21:9 TV on thier website, wow, looks amazing. As does the 65" Panasonic. Something for next year, although I'll probably go for the Panasonic 50" due to the mad price of the 60"+ TV's.

Even with my contacts help - the 58" Philips is looking too expensive frown.

The 56" can be done though - now, how much am I going to miss 3D, when in my original post I couldn't give a flying st about it. Now I've started looking into it though.....
