I'm sticking with 37"
A mate has a 40" in quite a large lounge....and to me still seems too big...
I've had 2 37"s...prfect size IMO. Non intrusive on a wall, lights out still gives a decent cinematic experience.

Just my two penneth worth, I have just come from a 36" crt and was adamant that I didn't want anything dominating the room so decided that 37" would be the biggest I would go. Bit then after looking around and measuring up I found that the 42" g20 was roughly the same size as my old 36" crt due to the speakers being at the rear. The new tv's are all screen at the front meaning that for their screen size they are quite small.

Might be worth measuring up just to make sure, if still too bog then you've lost nothing.

Get a 42 and then pretend it's a 37... easy! smile
Yes, but hide the measuring tape, to be on the safe side.
Alternatively, you could tell her it's bigger than it really is - like you've done before with other things!
She'll think it doesn't look so big, and can boast to the neighbours how you've got a massive one now.
Win-win, I'd say.

Sony 37EX503 from Amazon for around £630 (was £580 when I bought mine a few weeks ago) and Sony refund the equivalent of the VAT so final cost will be under £540. Great picture and has Freeview HD tuner.

The problem being that the tv is hung on a wall which jutchs out, like a chimney breast if you will.

So the size is obvious as it starts reaching the edges of the wall.

Okay, then let me spell it out for you - home entertainment is the man's department!
Which fridge/dish washer/microwave is the joint decision's department.
So, given we're talking about entertainment and not cooking/cleaning, then YOU decide which TV you'll all enjoy watching Strictly/Emmerdale/Extreme Fishing on.

Get it bought, get it hung, get it switched on, and start entertaining yourselves. biggrin

I like the cut of this jib.... and thanks for the additional choice Glosphill....
I'm still thinking the 37" plasma + Humax PVR HD is better than 37-40" LCD with tuners but no recording HDD.....

I use a Humax 9300T for recording purposes with my Sony 37EX503. Bought the 9300T direct from Humax for £120. The extra cost for a model able to record HD was more than I was prepared to pay. Total cost of the tele + PVR was under £600 . To me there is not much difference between 576i SD and the currently broadcasted 1080i HD. I sit about 9½ feet from the tele. I have not yet tried blu-ray 1080p. A Sony BDP-S370 blu-ray player for around £120 or less will be my next purchase.

Haha, I've already measured out where each size (Panasonic) would come, and she's not silly, she'd know if it was 42". Personally I'm blagging a 37" as it is as she wants a 32".

Now, I've a second problem and it's the fact I might not be able to buy the 37" Plasma Panasonic and get it home in either A: a Caterham 7, or B: an MX 5?

Buy online, have it delivered?
Borrow a more suitable car?
Stick it on a snowboard, walk or tow it home?

Tell the missus, that because of car choice, option 1 is only one doable, but they don't home deliver the 37", only 42"+
There's that win-win thing again! biggrin

Of cousre for £35 I can get PS3 play and then have my twin tuner freeview recorder.....
That would allow me to get the LCD TV...
Would the picture be better?
Would the extra tech and energy saving be worth it?

I'm no further forward now... frown

Edit: 9am
Abusing work to allow me to surf and shop and research by purchase...
I'm now leaning towards the Sony KDL40EX503.... £579 from RS....plus the PS3 Play TV...

I think that might be the compromise of all the people shouting "GET A 42"!!", not having to get a seperate Humax box and not spending more than £600 on a quality telly....

You're a lost cause.....!
The 42G20 has USB for attaching a hard drive to, to record to.
For the sake of £50, you'd rather have a less elegant solution in the form of TV and external box with its own separate remote control to have to contend with.

its been said before smile
If you read my edit above: I'm thinking of the 40" Sony with built in Freeview tuner....and record stuff on my existing PS3 HDD. No need for USB leads...

the difference between 40 and 42 inches is feck all, and you won't have a Sony. No brainer for me.

Sorry, thought you were still on the Humax track.....

Reviews where?
What settings did the reviewer use - standard or a set-up disc at least?
What material did they use to assess it with?

The Sony you're interested in - http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/news/sony-kdl40ex503-kdl...
The Panny G20 - http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/news/panasonic-txp42g20-...

Note the last part of the Sony review regarding gaming usage, and the motion resolution prior to that.

I'm in the same market as you wanting a 37". Got it down to these two:

Both have freeview HD, both are the same price. Both look pretty good.

LG 37 led
http://www.richersounds.com/product/led-tv/lg/37le...

Sony 40 lcd (which i think you've mentioned)
http://www.johnlewis.com/230887955/Product.aspx

At moment, going to go with the LG for the led image, though might change my mind at the last moment.

The Sony is an award winner but has now been found out as being crap for gamers...
The LG doesn't rate well if you google it.... but thta might be comparatively to other LEDs in which case it might still be better than LCD...
The Panasonic Plasma at the top of this thread seems a bargain, but no freeview...
