Speaker cable..

Yes Tony but can you hear the difference? (I'm going to regret this)
Lol - I seem to recall you were one of the early participants in this thread.Yes, I can hear the differences between certain cables (and before you say it - yes - these were all roughly the same thickness in real terms) so I'm not comparing bell wire with thich 20A stuff.

Surely this boils down to two things.
1) It's subjective.
2) Personal preference.
Subjective..
If you believe that £10,000 per metre speaker cable or a £500,000 Hi-Fi is worth it then no amount of arguing will ever change your mind. You've bought it because you believe it's the best; therefore it is.
Yes, but I don't spend more than £2 - £3 per meter on any cable I have ever bought, so I don't feel the need to justify the expense, because there is none really...1) It's subjective.
2) Personal preference.

Personally I dislike Linn amps, but I know other people who think they're pretty good. How I interpret the mush coming out of a pair of Stax or B&W speakers suits Naim or McIntosh amps.
The same goes for speaker cable. Some people will like what they hear, others might not be able to tell the difference.
Just my 2p worth
But this too is subjective surely? (or am I confusing objective with subjective - it's been known...)Personally I dislike Linn amps, but I know other people who think they're pretty good. How I interpret the mush coming out of a pair of Stax or B&W speakers suits Naim or McIntosh amps.

I'm a great believer in synergy. Some kit really does work well together - some simply does not.
Just like you, I dislike Linn amps - and find them dull and boring (well the older Linn stuff anyway).
And your last paragraph re: cable - basically hammers the point on the head.
And again, that is an issue of synergy. When there is synergy it sounds good.
And of course there are those that simply can't hear the difference / don't care.
But let's not kick of that debate again!!
This topic ended with (IIRC) JustinP1 stating that he was going to perform some measurements with real cable and real speakers. He obviously hasn't done so - but then I spotted the website I cited above - and thought it may be of interest....

I gave up on that due to the fact there was no real consensus on methodology. Oh, and my time was short because I have since become a father! There was also the factor that I had no mechanical measurement equipment. My concern was I would spend a day getting audio files, another day hosting them somewhere for us to be no further forward due to the lack of accuracy and no agreement on method.

No problem, it would have been a nightmare anywayThere was also the factor that I had no mechanical measurement equipment. And ** congratulations **
Cheers guys!
What is even better than having a beautiful, healthy daughter is that we discovered when she was three weeks old and on an occasion she would not stop crying was that she loves listening to music!
It was like switching off the crying switch, and her little face comes alive.
Now she is more than happy to dance around with me, or even just sit with me for half an hour, even an hour just listening.
Fatherly bliss. And she doesn't even care what speaker cable I am using, and neither do I. Maybe this is the moral of this story?

I love those cable supports. One question though, will the different frequencies travelling down the wire have problems going up and down those 'hills'?Gassing Station | Home Cinema & Hi-Fi | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
