I'm wanting to replace my current 32" viera which in our current lounge is now a little too small, we sit approx 16' away from the screen. Looking at a 42" but am so confused by whats on the market and would love some help in sorting the fluff from the good stuff. Budget is anywhere from £500-1k though I'd prefer to spend towards the bottom end of this. I like Panasonics products so would ideally like to stick with them. Looking at both Best Buy and R/Sounds there plenty to choose from including a nice looking LED unit at around £800.
Any advice would be much appreciated...

I'd go for the biggest plasma you can get at that viewing distance. I think you can get the G20 50 inch for well inside your budget now, and they're a superb display.

There are no LED TVs on the market ... this is know as OLED ..

What you are referring to is back lit by LED ... cheap LCD 'LEDs' use side lighting .. so you get more 'brightness' at the edge.

I agree as above, buy a Plasma ...

Thanks for the info so far. Presumably I'd need full 1080p resolution? Also what are peoples thoughts on 3D TV? Not something I have a major interest in just yet, especially given the number of channels available but if it's something thats only going to get bigger and more popular is it worth future proofing a TV now or is it really not up to/worth it?

It's pretty good, I've got a 3D panny and there's times it's great. I don't think it's there yet though, and you certainly won't be future proofing by buying one now, but it's got novelty value which some 6 months later has yet to wear off for me. I don't use it that often though.

I'd suggest the G20 too, but if you want the benefit of HD you'll need bigger than 50" 16 feet on a 50" and you won't get the HD benefit. We sit 12 feet away from our 50" and quite honestly could have gone bigger by at least one possibly 2 sizes.

Useful chart to help you out here:

Can't help with the 3D I'm afraid, I think some things are best left in the cinema for now.
