Anyone know which is the nicer of the 2 HI hotels? Corby or Peterboro

Are they decent to stay in for food or which is in a better area to go out for Dinner

Unfortunately I can't make the Friday or Saturday but will be coming
down for the full day on Sunday and want to then stop over
(as the following day we are going onto Malvern for the Morgan Factory Trip)

Thanks
Richard

Stay in Stamford - far nicer than either of the other 2 and only round the corner form the meet.

If I read it correctly, Corby is £50 pn based on 2 sharing whereas P'boro is £60 for the room.
That's correct but I would also presume that the P'boro rate is also based on 2 people sharing as that is the normal case with hotel room bookings. Also the Corby hotel has a full breakfast menu included in the rate for both Friday night & Saturday whereas the P'boro rate (also with breakfast included) looks like it's just for the Saturday night only after re-reading the thread on the TVRCC forum, but I'm sure someone will put me right if I've got it wrong.

There are other discounted rates available at the Corby hotel but you will need to speak to the hotel on booking.

Both are chain hotels so although they will be clean and probably good value, they will be the same as any other corporate/business traveller hotel - great if you're having a party or stay as part of a group but not that inspiring if on your own, especially when quiet on a Sunday night. Also both are on the outskirts of town.

If it were me I'd head for something nicer & more individual. As said above Stamford has loads of good places as do the Rutland villages a couple of miles to the west. I live in the area so PM me with an approx budget if you want some suggestions wink

I agree smile I live about 8 miles from Stamford, much better to stay there.

All good hotels smile The William Cecil, Normanton, George, Toft, Barnsdsle are best for parking, without fear smile large areas etc.

Thanks for all the replies guys

One of the main things that attract me to the Holiday Inns though is the swimming pools
as I find after a long day a swim and sauna is very relaxing.

As it is only 1 night then using a hotel chain is OK and the cost is good for B&B as well for 2 of us

I take it then that there is no real preference between the 2 places then? (Corby or Peterboro)

Thanks again
Richard

Who is organising the drive on Saturday? The only reason I ask is I know the area really well having lived here for 30 years. If you need advice on the route let me know because I drive these roads every day and do similar routes in my Tvr. I drive out along the Colsterworth road around Stamford, all around Rutland, the A47, A15 to Lincoln and all the back roads etc. the route suggests Colsterworth road I presume to Bourne? Bourne to Glinton? I live 2 miles from there smile Just interested what your planning. The bluebell is ok, but given your route and end destination there are more suitable options as ideally the west side of the A1 around Rutland water area and the roads around Oundle etc place you in a better position, where in fairness the better roads are anyway. Just a few thoughts smile

The hotels will be very similar. If it was me I'd choose P'boro, especially if you want to have dinner away from the hotel. However if was me I'd leave the swimming trunks behind and round off the weekend by staying at one of the places listed in the link above wink

There will be 2 runs on Saturday...
  1. 12.00 The Dykes and Ditches Tour which is heading East from the A1 services at Colsterworth ending at the Holiday Inn P'boro. This is being organised by Mike Whiston who is the East Mids TVRCC RO.
  2. 14.00 The Rutland Rumble from The Royal Oak, Duddington near Stamford, staying to the West of the A1 in & around Rutland, returning to Duddington a couple of hours later. This one is being organised by a random bloke from Uppingham.... me biggrin

And the most important question.........is it possible to do both? Or do they overlap?

That sounds more sensible. Interesting to see what roads are picked. There are some little gems of back roads that are great for a blast with some great sights smile

Not possible to do both I'm afraid due to start/end times and being in completely different areas.

Very true which makes it hard to choose the best ones, especially when trying to make junctions etc as easy as possible to keep people reasonably close together! Off out to try a couple of ideas out later today wink

I would stay well clear of Peterborough. I would not feel safe walking in certain parts of the city, let alone leaving a TVR there. Believe me as l have to live in the city , get a hotel as close to Stamford as possible, l can't wait to get out of Peterborough and move to Stamford.

It's not Beruit tongue out but your point is a valid one, however most of the hotels are on the outskirts of Peterborough. The ones around Stamford will be more expensive but for a reason smile

Holiday Inn - Peterborough West is fine, near parkland and a golf course. The Ramada near Thorpe Meadows is a good spot too, right near a river and the boathouse pub smile The Haycock at Wansford is lovely, with a lot of history in a sleepy village smile all have massive parking areas and these are also all on the west side of Peterborough with easy access to the A1 and Stamford smile

If anyone needs advice on ones closer to Stamford as well then mail me on here smile the main ones at Stamford are all good smile more picturesque like the Haycock smile the crown is not so ideal as it's in the centre of Stamford, the William Cecil, Bull and Swan, Normanton, George and Barnsdale Lodge all ideal smile

Hey Clive, see you there, I'm at the rather less salubrious 'Green Man' just the other side of the river, Friday and Saturday night. Just praying for a break in the clouds now. Will Braders be joining us again? He doesn't to be on PH much recently.
