Not much information to be found so far, other than the video. Hope they are all OK!

Official FIA statement:

'A serious incident has occurred during Race 1 of Round 4 of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship, involving car number 18 Zhi Cong Li (CHN), number 3 Ryan Tveter (USA) and number 5 Pedro Piquet (BRA).

Following on-track evaluation, Zhi Cong Li and Ryan Tveter were transferred to the circuit’s medical centre. One driver was initially unconscious, but both drivers were conscious on arrival at the medical centre.

Zhi Cong Li has subsequently been taken to hospital via helicopter due to possible head and back injuries.

Ryan Tveter was taken to hospital by ambulance for further examination.'

From reading reports Pedro Piquet, the 3rd driver involved, didn't have any injuries.

Horrible sense of the inevitable when the first car spins to a halt. Hope the injuries aren't too bad and everyone recovers. If you can take a positive from it, it's that the stranded car was at least pointing forward when it was hit, as the alternative really doesn't bear thinking about with that sort of impact.

Autosport said:
European Formula 3 racer 'Peter' Li Zhi Cong has sustained four fractured vertebrae and multiple broken bones in one heel in his enormous Red Bull Ring crash.

Li was launched into the air when he hit Carlin team-mate Ryan Tveter's car after it had spun in Saturday morning's opening race.

The Carlin team issued a statement on his condition, saying: "Peter is undergoing treatment for multiple broken bones in his heel, which will require surgery in the near future.

"Peter has also been diagnosed with four fractured vertebrae, which do not require surgery.

"While suffering with bruising and other small injuries, Peter is alert and speaking with team personnel."

Both Li - who was flown by helicopter - and Tveter were transferred to hospital in Graz.

Tveter has already been discharged from hospital, with heavy bruising to his knee.

Wow, that first impact was colossal! So unusual to have a square-on impact, rather than offset.

Good to see the gravity with which the spectating Carl Fogerty (?) treated the incident . 'Look, we're on TV - yay !'. Not impressed.

Dam that was a big crash, but that F3 chassis is a strong one to hold up to that punishment.

To be fair, within the few seconds between the accident and that camera shot, probably very few of the spectators would have known what had happened.
They should have spotted a red flag - but for all they knew that could have been just because there was a piece of debris on the track or that some numpty spectator had jumped over a barrier or a car stopped on circuit - they simply wouldn't have known.

That wasn't Carl Fogarty.

Perhaps- but monster shunt, presumably on the same circuit TV as picked up the Fogerty lookalike. Director shouldn't have shown it at all in any case - at that stage the extent of injury was unknown.
Calls to mind an incident at Oulton a few years ago - also in F3 - we could see a huge shunt in the distance and an irritated Scouse voice from behind us pipes up 'Wot's that all about...?'

He always is.

Huge crash though testament to how strong modern racing cars even at a junior level they are.

It has already been pointed out that it was not Carl Fogarty.

To be fair I think I would end up smiling and waving if I realised my face was being projected across the TV screens around the circuit laugh

I presume the TV directors just had to cut away from the accident just in case anything got shown that shouldn't be - Cue cut to crowd.

Got it in one.

Huge accident has just gone out live the first thing the director should and does do is cut to something else whilst looking at all available angles of the accident scene on their monitors to try to assess if it is 'safe' to cut back to or if they need to keep off it.

Cut to crowd is one of the easiest options to avoid it big too 'jarring'; for the viewer.

As for smiling and waving - point a live TV camera at almost anyone and their default reaction is smile, point and wave - not all of them point though hehe

A favourite game for directors (which you see all the time if you look for it) is to put to line a shot of a group, wait until one has recognised it and then just as they tell their mates and they turn, cut away...

Almost as favourite a game as cutting to the reaction of some Z list sleb who has blagged a pass into a pit garage and feels the need to gurn and mug every time s/he is in the same post code as a camera. Director does this just as a crucial overtake is taking place. Oddly enough ,on the rare times I watch TV motor sport- cal me old fashioned- I quite like watching racing .

I would allow this one, more of an A lister but the gurn is legendary and was at least shown after it happened and not during as they tend to now.
