Firstly a big thanks to the organizers of a great event.

Sadly my short trip back up the M1 from the Ace to Watford on Sunday was not without event.

The rain was sitting two inches deep on the road and visibility was appalling.

I was being extra safe in my Chimaera.

However, as I came upon an especially deep section of water just before the London Gateway services I started to see debris littering the road ahead.

Carefully avoiding the generous scattering of small pieces of car, hazard warning lights became visible through the haze of torrential rain.

Then I saw it!

My heart sank as what appeared to be a TVR Chimaera or perhaps a Cerbera was sitting in the hard shoulder with a silver Audi A6 estate.

I say "Chimaera or perhaps a Cerbera" because whatever model it was, it had lost most of its body up the M1, there was bits of GPP everywhere!

Clearly it had just happened as the emergency services had yet to arrive.

I did my duty and stopped ahead of the two cars in the hard shoulder, reversing carefully back to see if I could offer any help.

The driver came up and thanked me for stopping but said he didn't need my assistance, he explained he had aquaplaned and the car just spun.

"Be careful" were his last words to me.

I followed his advise & continued back to Watford feeling shaken and concerned I should have done more for that poor guy.

Do we know who it was?

If you are the said unfortunate and reading this, I think I can speak for all of us when I offer my sincere commiserations over the destruction of your TVR.

I was very relieved to find you unharmed and wish you the very best of luck in repairing your car.

Kind regards, Dave.

yikes glad to hear the guy was okay, there have been a few incidents reported on here of people spinning off in the very wet conditions we had at the weekend, main thing being no one being hurt, hope the chap gets things sorted out okay.

It seems it was a Tuscan after all, just discovered another post started by the man himself.

It just shows how bad the visibility was that the model wasn't clear to me.

The chap was so calm & philosophical he even had the grace to say "be safe" as I rejoined the motorway.

He is clearly a genuinely nice guy, imagine thinking of others at a time like this.

I would be crying.

It was terrible weather on the way back i must say. For the 1st time (and i hate to say this) i think the average speed cameras of 50mph helped keep most people on the straight and narrow on the M25 (taking to account other crazy drivers who may crash into you as they still attempt to floor in in torrential rain...)

Yep def was bad on way back up the A1 after I left the Ace.

I actually pulled off the A1 and sat in a KFC having a coffee waiting for the rain to pass, as even though I was driving safely other drivers were up my ass as I was significantly slower due to light car, fat tyres and lots of water.

I drove up the M1 about 11 am ish hit the standing water, turd touched cloth as I just missed the wall. Only doing about 40mph as well. It just goes to show even when being sensible you need to be on the ball.

I consider myself lucky, I was able to drive home and put my car away but I still felt a bit sick as it could have been very different.

I know titt's date is important but would it not be sensible for this to be done in the summer?

Yep I agree.

It's lighter in the mornings in the summer.

laugh can you tell me which "summer" day you can guarantee no rain? I don't mean to be flippant, as I fully understand the question, but there are a couple of other factors:

1) We did do one in the summer, TiTT 2 August 2008, which got a small attendance.
2) The ACE cafe will not give us a summer date - Sundays are reserved for bikers.

So, a couple of days ago i posted up for ideas on a different end venue for a summer event. I do have a couple of ideas, but i don't have a monopoly on good ideas, so welcome suggestions smile

I am assuming that Tunnels need to play a role, as there are plenty of other events that involve parking in a field and looking at shiny cars smile
I'll pop a post up and see what happens

Hi David,

Do not think you are being flippant. As you say ou can not gurantee it but it is less likely and if it does rain it is less likely to be torrant (I know I will be proved wrong here). Just seen your other thread and there seems to be some good ideas on there.

Paul.......

We passed a people carrier that had flipped and was on it's side in a tunnel, no emergency services there and a crowd of people bashing at the windscreen clearly trying to get the people out, so it JUST had happened. Then later on a Wrangler Jeep on it's side on the hard shoulder too. I was driving like a granny in the Elise as it weighs less than a mini, and that standing water plus braking would have been the end of me. I was SO pissed to see so many idiots in the outside lane still battering along at over 80mph, do the words "modify driving to suit conditions" not mean anything to these bozos???

No NIP in the post yet though so that's the first week I've escaped, just 1 more weeks wait....argh.....
