Who, what was Gwaewar?
I'm not a Tolkien geek, but I do know this one fact.
umm not sure- in the simarillon the eagle that later rescues gandalf has a similar name. I'm not a Tolkien geek, but I do know this one fact.
For me the filmed trilogy was reuined as a "concept" by the ending. I loved the films, but they didn't touch the heartstrings as they did with the books- well they did touch me, right up until the end.
The hobbits journey from weak and quiet to strong and able to stand up to humans- ie chucking out "sharkey" was KEY to the books. Also the fact that the mill and the trees had been cut down was key as well- symbolic that evil can succed anywhere but can be stood up to by the strong, who can become strong when required.

Gilraen?
that's the one! now be honest, did you look it up?Gwhalir (sp?) was Lord of the Eagles in the third age, and saved Gandalf and the Hobbits in LOTR. He is a descendant of Throrondor, mightiest of all eagles and Lord in the First age, who kept Goldolin safe...
