Prometheus - Ridley Scott's 'Alien Prequel' (or not)...

Yes yes, but can we please keep talking about it, my thread has nearly hit 100 pages
...but fk knows how.
Anyway, I'm expecting my blu-ray copy in the post tomorrow at which point I'll give it another go and see if it changes my initial opinion in any way.
Love it or hate it, the controversy it provokes (I believe) makes it a must for any sci-fi fans collection. Look, if you bought Aliens 4 you'll buy this. Those underwater CGI swimming Aliens were the worst abomination ever perpetrated on this franchise...this at least has sumptious visuals.
I acquired a BR copy last night, might watch it shortly as the visuals are worth another gander....but fk knows how.

I can't imagine there was a prequel/back story to the original film to any great depth.
In the novel of Alien it's one throwaway line - that the 'Engineers' (to use Prometheus terminology) are simply explorers. The egg chamber isn't even *in* the ship in the book - it's underground, all as part of the 'explorer finds something, that something kills him' back story.Northern Munkee said:
I mean would you feel if the choice for Blade Runner 2 was Ridley Scott or McG?
Given that choice I'll honestly take McG thanks. Terminator Salvation wasn't great but it was by no means as big a bag of st as Prometheus. It all smacks of studio interference wanting a broader demographic to go and watch it (lower age certificate), rather than the 'grown up' sci-fi film it should have been.
I'll bet there were some heated meetings going on pre-production between Scott and the Studio over the films direction.

Do we think a future "directors cut" could rescue it?
Or has it already been nuked from orbit?

I'd like to think that "the studio" was responsible for messing this up but I am sure I read somewhere that it was Ridley Scott's own production company which produced this? Is so he really has no one to blame but himself.I'll bet there were some heated meetings going on pre-production between Scott and the Studio over the films direction.

As for a directors cut, it's possible an extra 30 minutes or so could add back a lot of the missing plot points\elements but the script is basically un-salvageable IMO and it would still need to end in the same sh*t way unless they did a complete alternative ending.

Indeed, very interesting. Sounds like it would have been a much better film. SWoll said:

You seem to be making up your own story to fill in the glaring blanks that the film leaves behind.
.
No. Everything I've said, quoted or referenced is in the film..
I'm all for pulling films apart, but a lot of criticism levelled at this is unfounded.
Acting
Cast Chemistry
Script
Tension/excitement generated
Soundtrack
I had real issues with all of the above, and combined with the plot holes (which i am usually happy to overlook in the quest for entertainment) ruined the film IMHO.
I *liked* the soundtrack, but it never quite hit the 'Oh f*ck' moments the trailer did. That high pitched scream actually sent shivers down my spine!
I went to see the film twice, and both times I was sucked in. And it has been a long f*cking while since I've been pulled into a film! Maybe that's why I'm so willing to overlook the sillier aspects? Maybe,

IIRC the 'lander' from the Nostromo looked very similar to Prometheus?
No. The ship in Alien that landed on the planetoid was the Nostromo. He refinery that it was towing was called, well a refinery .....MocMocaMoc said:
Erm, I dont want a fight here but... I dont think it was?
No, honestly, it was. The Nostromo was a tug boat* that was towing a refinery. As an extra, the escape craft that Ripley escaped in was called the Narcissus.
* - technically a "commercial towing spaceship"

Here is my 2p for what its worth.
I agree with the general feeling that it was a disappointment. I loved the Alien films, and couldnt wait to see it when it was released. I came away with the same opinion that most people do.
However, I've just rewatched the trailer (as I have bought the bluray but not got round to watching yet) and I think the trailer still makes the film look like it will be a classic. I think the trailer hyped the film up so much, and even watching it now, I can't wait to rewatch the film.
Ashame really

Just watches the deleted scenes on BluRay. Even those extra minutes make a (large) difference. We understand why the captain believes its WMD, why the Engineer got pissed off and why the biologist was not fearful of the face snake thing.
I hope a directors cut, with even more deleted scenes, gets released.

So come on, spill it. Put it in a spoiler tag if you must. I hope a directors cut, with even more deleted scenes, gets released.
