Prometheus - Ridley Scott's 'Alien Prequel' (or not)...

Bit unfair comparing the takings of something that's been out for 5 years with something that came out 3 weeks ago
The figures are from Box office mojo - so they are cinema ticket sales, not total revenue from DVD sales etc.I think 3 weeks after release, a movie will have taken most of what it is going to. Few films have the staying power to still have significant box office takings 3 weeks after launch.
It won't be long before it starts getting yanked, making way for the summer blockbusters. I'd be surprised if Covenant gets much more than $170 million in global ticket sales before it's pulled (unless China comes to the rescue - since it hasn't been released there yet. Prometheus wasn't released in China, so it's hard to gauge how popular it may be).
Even so - a movie usually has to make at the very least 2x it's production budget to be in with a shout of breaking even. Some people estimate 3x or 4x for larger movies by the time you factor marketing, plus the fact that the studio only gets around 50% of what is actually taken at the box office. Covenant is still a way off making 2x its production budget - let alone 3-4x

I think you;re about right on when new movies make their cash. THat's wjy co panies hate word of mouth and now open in thousands of cinemas as opposed to the old days.
Alien stenant is currently 40 million in the red, it won't break even, word of mouth will kill the sales on secondary media, like it did with Ghostbusters remake. Hopefully, this frnachise is now dead in the water.
I watched the angry guy Joe spoilers review (along with RLM, Kermode and the brilliant Smicht) and as he says, they just piss all over the legacy, the protomorph is what, invulnerable? ANd pretty perfect, why fk around with eggs? It just doesn't make sense, even forgetting about the ponderous, 'oh aren't we so smart' quasi-bullst filling the while film.
I have now so many angry ALien:C reviews on my youtube feed...

Although I've already watched it in the cinema I found it again on a streaming site and started to watch it again this week.
It really doesn't hold me and I don't think I could sit through it again. I made it to the landing bit before I got bored of it and switched it off.
That's from someone who has watched Prometheus half a dozen times and I'll watch it again without a problem. I know how much hate that film got but this one is a bit of a stinker.

Yep - and it shows. Box office mojo has a 'showdown' with Prometheus. If you look at the daily takings for Covenant for the first two weeks of release - apart from one day, they were all lower than Prometheus (in some cases as low as 40%).
http://www.boxofficemojo.com/showdowns/chart/?view...
It's domestic box office taking is exactly half that of Prometheus at the same stage of release.....i'd say that's pretty damning.
Even the steaming turd that what Ghostbusters 2016 had taken more domestically by the end of it's second week

I think the old technology is what gives the older film some of it's charm. It all adds to the truckers in space feel, basically the Nostromo is an old piece of junk used to ferry cargo.
The shiny shiny holo projected stuff in the new ones look cool but it totally kills that charm.
Agreed. Plus it's not really that unrealistic or immersion breaking when you consider how old the tech in the space shuttles is even today. Old stuff works, is tried and tested, there's no need to upgrade for the sake of upgrading. Radiation-hardened stuff is quite a bit slower than current generation CPUs etc too.The shiny shiny holo projected stuff in the new ones look cool but it totally kills that charm.
Plus, you get scenes like this with genuinely iconic and memorable sounds. That a system startup gets its own scene in the movie tells you how integral it is to the whole ensemble piece. Prometheus and Covenant by contrast are just "hey look at what CGI was like in the year that film came out".
Quite, the nukes run on old tapes!
The most interesting number on the mojo link for me is the cinema, AC opened in far more cinemas than Prom did...and still did poorly, also the budget, I guess the huge drop was the fact they had a lot of props pre-made from Prom....coupled with possibly a handbrake by the suits considering Prom didn't set the world alight.

I listened to his review - an pretty much agree with his analysis.
The biggest problem with Covenant is that it doesn't really build on the potential that Prometheus set up:
The engineers seem to have been cast aside as the main protagonists - to instead focus on David. Covenant doesn't really tell us anything more about them and I suspect they will become largely an irrelevance in any future movies. It feels like they will always be on the periphery and we'll likely end up with some half arsed explanation as to how one of their ships full of Xenomorph eggs came to reside on LV426 - shoehorned in just to tie up a loose end.
That will be a real shame as I think their backstory is potentially more interesting than that of the Xenomorphs who may have been better off remaining enigmatic.
The engineers felt fking retarded in my opinion. The biggest problem with Covenant is that it doesn't really build on the potential that Prometheus set up:

Why would a supposedly advanced, life creating, space faring race all crowd round under a returning spaceship like a bunch of ignorant savages? Does everyone in London congregate at the end of Heathrow's runway 2 cheering on the arrival of the 8:20 from JFK?
Why are they living in caves? Why is their furniture made out of rock? What is wrong with these people? I'm surprised they managed to discover fire let alone traverse the universe.

Yes, in that respect they are a bit like the Klingons. Any race that volatile amongst even themselves isn't going to progress too far. I mean, have you ever seen a meek, mild, intellectual klingon scientist? Can't imagine they'd make it past the first incident of accdentally stepping on someones toes Why would a supposedly advanced, life creating, space faring race all crowd round under a returning spaceship like a bunch of ignorant savages? Likewise the engineers seem a bit 'disconnected' from the level of technoalogy they appear to have achieved.

'Watch me... I'll do the fingering' Hilarious.
At least I don't need to watch the movie now. At least, until it hits Netflix...
Looks bloody awful. The flute scene especially, how can that be serious?

Ridley disappeared up his own backside years ago thats how. If you read some of the interviews before the film was released he was going on about wanting to do six films in the series, quite clearly thought he should have his own Star Wars or MCU franchise. Thankfully Fox seem to have realised that he isn't the Director he was and instead will reboot the series, hopefully that means we will see Blomkamp given his shot but most likely we'll see another 12A broad brush pile of rubbish again.Hilarious.

I managed to watch it finally, very pretty film in places but just woeful everywhere else. Felt like two different scripts, Ridley's Prometheus 2 and Blomkamp's Alien 2.5, mashed together.
Currently 50 minutes in to the latest installment in the franchise and it's basically just Prometheus all over again..
An amazing looking film full of utterly stupid people, doing utterly stupid things, reading a script that could have been written by a 5 year old. As one of my favourite directors I can't believe Ridley's done it again.
Thanks f**k he wasn't in charge of the new Blade Runner.

I'll probably do what I normally do and watch it on tv if it's in and I have nothing better to watch. It at least makes interesting background noise when doing other thing
But it really wasn't a good watch Covenant. I think the alien franchise has suffered a lot, like most other sci-films, from the extensive use of CGI.
When things had to be done with actual props scenes were a lot more believable as they weren't 'over done' like a lot of the CGI films are.
This obviously wasn't it's only fault....nor was it even one of its biggest (the script takes that crown), but it is something that really bugs me about modern films. The number of films that use CGI are very very limited in my opinion.
