ITV2 repeated the first series, by showing two episodes a night, at the beginning of the year so I thought I'd see what all the fuss was about.

I don't normally watch period dramas but I'm glad I watched Downton - it was addictive.

slight thread diversion ...

the currently running trailer ad for this new series, choral music in the background, is it a version of something recent (I'm thinking either something by U2 or the Rolling Stones).

ETA: It's with or without you by U2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yoe3CoxcYm0

Is that version available somewhere?

apparently, for anyone else interested, it is the version by "Scala & Kolacny Brothers" used on the advert.

Crikey, just youtubed them and they have done loads of stuff.

Find the "with or without you" strangely haunting"

Only Four quid for the album.
The Nivarna cover isn't so hot though.

Plussed. It was perhaps the best British show of last year? Zen came close.

I thought it was great.
The trenches weren't great in some shots but otherwise straight back to best.

Just started watching season 1 of this, based on the chat in this thread, and the TV show thread. 2 episodes in, and very impressed!

Good old fashioned Sunday night chill out in front of the TV with a large glass of something nice and red escapism. Love it!

Well, that is season 1 out of the way. Still, from someone who was never fond of period dramas, (there is enough period drama at that time of the month round here at the best of times), I'm now trying to discover other stuff like it. Any recommendations?

PS, Lady Sybill... Nom, nom!

Brilliant show, watched it from the start series 1.I was amazed when i found out Julian Fellows aka Julian Alexander Kitchener-Fellowes, Baron Fellowes of West Stafford, had written it,as I was a fan of his when he played Killwillie in Monarch of the glen, and he also practiced this when he wrote the film he won an Oscar for Gosford Park

It's the grandmother that gets me, that is such a superbly crafted character - some of her sneering just gives me belly laughs
