I have to agree here. I watched this last night....good god, the cinematic equivalent of watching paint dry. It looked nice and all that but it was so unbelievably slow paced and all the 'action' seemed to have been fitted in to allow the pregnant pauses to have some validity...it was just for me, horribly disjointed..
I agree. Awful movie. Very slow. The start promised so much and then it just dragged out nothing until the end.

Just watched this and thought it was really good. That one bit of music was overplayed a little bit but it worked. The worst bit was the car chase bit, the first getaway was good/realistic but the chase was stupid. If they had made that chase good I think it could have gone down as a real classic.

Watched this last night at the flicks.

The soundtrack was ace - For me, Layer Cake and Slumdog Millionaire were the last 2 films whose soundtrack rivalled Drives for just being 'right' for the film.

The opening scene in the car was ace, full of tension and atmospheric.

Was violent at times but not gratuitous.

For me could have done with a few less dramatic pauses (although Goslings character is cool) and another car chase or 2 would have been great.

Easily in my top 5 films, I totally got it however I dont think everyone will like it.

Best response so far!

My friend and I had very differing opinions over this film. Both of us agreed that with exception of the 'Hero' track becoming quite tedious, the rest of the soundtrack was very well picked and made the intro to the film quite promising.

However, after the initial pick up and brief drive (was amazed at how many upshifts he was managing even at a steady pace at the start), I lost interest almost throughout. My disappointment was briefly lifted with scenes like the motel bathroom and the jewellery store, but this was soon replaced by wondering why I was still in my seat after an hour and twenty minutes.

I've always vowed that I'll never walk out part-way through a film, as I'll always give it a chance, but I had honestly had enough after this time and only held on for the minute possibility of a decent ending. My hopes were shattered with what has become the obligatory 'make your own mind up' ending that is all but overused these days.

Yes, its 'art house'. Yes, it's dark and emotional and yes, I can see that. What I can't see is the fascination with 5 minute pauses in dialogue, a script that felt like it had no destination from the beginning and a distinct feeling of dislocation from the lead roles. Ryan Gosling has been very good in a number of films, and didn't doubt his abilities in this. His character portrayal worked well and was immediately apparent, but IMO there was no real need for the silent film-esque sequences, especially not as long as they were.

Overall, was very disappointed. I wouldn't necessarily tell people not to see it, as I think it needs to be seen. The hype over how gripping and emotional this was though seems a little far fetched and protentious for me and think that these types of emotions are much more evident in other films that don't include the same monotonous slow motion panning and lack of speech.

Yep, that pretty much sums it up for me. I said before that i should have waited for the DVD but i think i may not have watched it to the end in that case.

Ditto!

Can't remember the last film I saw at the cinema I thought "that was good" let alone "that was great".
I walked out thinking that was brilliant! It was very artsy, it went at a pace that wasnt too fast, and the soundtrack was excellent. Check out 'Hero' by College feat. Electric Youth http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DSVDcw6iW8 - not something id normally listen to, but after watching the film, it makes we want to go drive some classic american muscle with this in the tape player!

Very enjoyable

Really? It's the most annoying piece of music ever created IMO, above the "I know a song that'll get on your nerves!" song.

Finally got round to watching this film this morning , thought it was excellent . kind of a nostalgic kind of eighties feel to the soundtrack which i kind of really enjoyed

Hardly recognised any of the actors but i think this fact helped me enjoy it more ,

First class highly recommend

Just watched it myself and would 100% agree, easily in the top 10 I have watched and restored my faith in film a little after watching some real dross lately.

I totally got the slow paced, over dramatic pause stuff but I can see why some wouldn't. May watch it again with the mrs tomorrow just for that soundtrack biggrin

As much as I loved the film, the track 'Hero' did irritate me a bit as well, it was played too much.

I recently read the book, which, like all book-to-movie stories is chopped and changed to fit Hollywood's needs.

The character of 'Driver' is given some background; he comes from a foster family, and at 16 he took the family car and scarpered to LA. He ended up hanging around the movie studios, and eventually fell in with a stunt car driver, who gave him some training and gave him his shot at driving.

Driver (you still don't know his name) learned some fighting moves from other stunt men, which is why he's pretty good at handling himself.

The events of the film happen in the book too, but in a different order, and the girl and child play a much shorter role. The way she leaves the story is quite abrupt too. (And unrelated to events in the film too)
The NASCAR stuff isn't there though, and neither is his 'manager', I presume they were put in the film to aid the viewer in seeing how he got involved with the mafia types, but the book's version of events is even simpler to portray.

It's not a long book, only a couple of hundred pages long, but it was enjoyable to read.

watched this last night. It was alright.

I liked the 80s feel, the soundtrack was pretty good although I felt the classical piece when he rams samcro off the road was out of place and it had a very michael mann atmosphere and look to it.

the first car chase was enjoyable, the second one a bit more silly and an opportunity lost in my opinion. The cgi was ropey in some of the violent parts and I get the feeling the ending is supposed to suggest he died.

No, he drives off getting as far away from her as possible, but lives to drive another day.

Destroying the lincoln town car and ramming it down to the beach while not even getting a broken headlight on his 72 Chevy Malibu (had to look that one up) is kind of unforgivable

but hey, superb otherwise

It's a brilliant film. For me it wasn't really about cars or violence, but about loneliness (and belonging). I loved it. Some nice V8 action to boot. I have a lot of time for Gosling - his role in this transforms from subtle and understated to masochistic and brutal. I didn't want the film to end.

I far preferred only god forgives, but as I say its one of those films, imagine no one would ever score it anywhere between 2 to 8

I really enjoyed Drive. I would give it a 9/10. Everyone I have seen it with has found it boring though. A few friends like it.

I also enjoyed Only God Forgives, which I found excellent. I don't know anyone else who liked it, pretty much everyone I know thinks it's crap.
