The Wire - does it ever get going?
Discussion
Wow...epic finale. Turns out alright for most of 'em...save for Dookie, but sad for him, but nice to see the ending for everyone else...even if Daniels should have stayed on as Commish.
Also sad for Omar, but nice to see Michael take the mantle up...and Marlo? I like to think he gets his commence...also ace to see Cheeze get his. Always like Slim...."this sentimental motherfker just cost us 900!"
And the montage ending...all the sites, recognised most of 'em...and the new characters in familiar positions...the game goes on...

+1Great to see Bubbs gets to eat upstairs with his sister's family.
Here’s a good interview with David Simon for those who have finished watching the series.

Sepinwall's very good review of '-30-'

And to answer OP’s question, David Simon mentioned in the interview ‘... The first season was on some level training the audience to watch television a little bit differently, and reducing the expectations in terms of pacing, in terms of cliffhangers, in terms of the requirement to absorb detail or even to look for symbolism...’
The Sopranos and the Wire are the top two TV drama of all time.

The only story I would want to see continued would be Michael's. He would be more than capable of being the next Omar. He even adopting Omar's favoured side by side 12ga.
Maybe i'm forgetting some parts of his story, but I didn't feel that Michael had a 'code' in the same way that Omar did. If you want to see his story continued, the actor is in 90210, which has just as satisfying a storyline as The Wire. Honest.redtwin said:

I think the point was that we should just go back to series one and pretend that Omar was the grown up Michael. That's what "the game" did.I was watching How I Met Your Mother recently, and in what seemed unconnected conversation in their booth, Lilly said something that sounded 'Wire-y', which was responded to by Robin saying "The Game is The Game". As it was just on in the background, that made me sit up and think: WTF?! I've no idea why that was in there.

I always took the Michael story arc to be a metaphor for those living in the ghetto to be condemned to repeat the cycle. Omar goes, someone replaces him. He goes in turn & it continues without hope of redemption.
The same with Marlo and Avon, every police commissioner, McNulty and Greggs. The game stays the same. Prawo Jazdy said:

He did have a code though, despite the attempts of Chris and Snoop to mould him into a mindless killing machine he always asked questions and deliberated whether the victim deserved to die. He was fiercely loyal to his friends coming to the aid of Randy despite rumours of him being a snitch and woe betide anyone who had a go at Dookie. In the end, parting ways with Dookie was more for Dookie's benefit as there is no way he would have survived the cut throat gangster lifestyle that Michael was headed deeper into. Also, while Michael had the wherewithal to rob anyone, we saw that he chose to rob players in the drug game.Like Omar, a very dangerous individual, but only to those in the game. Chris would kill anyone just for looking at him the wrong way...or on the command of his boss. If I were to accidentally bump into any of them on the street, I would rather it was Michael/Omar than Chris.
I saw him in 90210, but just couldn't bring myself to watch more than 5-10 minutes of it.
I've just had 2 (seperate) people say this programme is fantastic, but only once you get past the first 4 or 5 episodes - is that about right?
p.s. I watched most of the first episode about a year ago and thought it was terrible; My thinking at the time was, if they can't get the Pilot right - which is supposed to be the episode that 'sells' the series - then what chance has the rest of the series got?
I don't have the time to waste on 4 x 1hour if this turns out to be pants.

It requires a bit of effort, I suppose you could say it doesn't suffer fools, not that I'm calling you a fool.p.s. The plot isn't spoon fed and the viewer doesn't always join the action at the start of it either. You might find yourself watching for whole episodes wondering what the hell is going on, why is this character doing this, his reasoning might only become apparent a few episodes down the line, similarly characters you haven't seen for half a series might pop out of nowhere and do something, usually nasty and violent.
I agree it takes a few episodes to get into it, but it's not that it starts badly and gets better, it just takes a long time for things to take shape.
A couple of hours to try to penetrate the accents and lingo don't hurt either!
It took me 2 goes to get into, the 1st time I gave up after the 1st episode as I found the dialogue almost impenetrable, however I gave it another go a few months later and ended up watching all 5 seasons back to back. I'm so glad I gave it a 2nd chance as it is by far the best drama series I have ever seen on TV.

That's why I love the show. It's more than a cop show and it's more than Baltimore's institutions - its the systems that fail people. I've not come across a show that has that depth.
Right I've got a fecking great scratch on my box set of The Wire Season 1 Ep 4
I'll try one of those disc repair systems, but not that hopeful.
Can anyone point me to somewhere safe I can download a torrent or whatever just for that episode suitable for sticking on my network server?
Thanks in advance.
