Mentioned it earlier in the thread but the moment that gripped me was one early doors in season 1 with Lester Freamon. There he was, a detective who'd presumably upset someone, been sidelined looking after property store for ages, occupied himself with his hobby.

Now posted to this new unit where he realised the intention was that his role would be that of just another useless pair of boots that wouldn't get anything done, only for him to come alive and return to being a real police.

Time for me to rewatch this. Upon first viewing it was easily my favourite TV series, so I bought it on DVD.
Since then there have been quite a few box sets to compete, and I'd kind of forgotten about The Wire.
Need to open my DVD box set which I think is still sealed.

Started watching this last night and enjoying it so far so thanks for the recommendation, if it's even half as good as The Wire it will be worth it.

Got it, the scene where Cutty goes to Avon to ask for money for the gym.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wT3J7-ZSaXw

Avon maybe thinking on about where he could've been, instead of where he is. A "rep" but for the right reasons.

ON THIS DAY

On the 2nd June 2002, 'The Wire' premiered on HBO.

THE greatest TV show of all time.

What's the best moment in the show?

Thanks for resurrecting this thread.

I have now dug out my box sets and started what is probably my eighth run through.

For me, it is TV perfection and it still grabs me within a few episodes.

Just reading the Sopranos thread reminded me that 'the other best TV show ever made' is getting a sort or, maybe, kinda follow up.

David Simon the creator of The Wire and The Corner is making a 6 part mini series based on the book and true story 'We own this City' which was written by another Baltimore Sun reporter, if that's not a recipe for as close to another series of The Wire, then I don't know what is.

A few familiar faces.

Marlo

Dookie

Donut (the 12 year old Joy Rider)

B-more looking a bit fresher than it did in The Wire

Plus, Domenick Lombardozzi (Herc) Delaney Williams (Jay Landsman)

Great, it looks like they are "putting the band back together" smile

Might have to read the book now, sounds interesting.

Edit: book purchased, the author sounds like he's cut from the same cloth as David Simon so I know I will enjoy it.

Have been listening to this and have just started the book today. One highlight is that in 2005 in a city of just over 600,000 people 100,000 arrests were made yikes

I don't think I would put Baltimore on my 'places I want to visit' list.

"Omar coming"

One of the best characters in The Wire, such a shame the man had demons.

Terrible news. RIP Michael K Williams.

A complex, conflicted and self-destructive character both on & off screen, who literally ‘became’ Omar (minus the “rip & run” with a shotgun) for a troubled time in real-life, but created one of television’s most memorable characters with a stellar acting performance.

One of the reasons The Wire is so good is the heavy dose of authenticity in many aspects. Some actors - like MKW - blurred the line between themselves & the role they played, but also played versions, or composites at least, of real-life persons, including Donnie Andrews, a stick-up artist & murderer with a ‘code’, who not only inspired the part of Omar but consulted on The Wire and appeared on screen too.

MKW was also very watchable in ‘Boardwalk Empire’ too. He brought a lot of soul, emotion & charisma to the roles he played.

Seems quite fitting that last night, binge-watching the series yet again, the last episode I viewed before (belatedly) going to bed was the penultimate episode of Season 3, a high point for both the show & Omar (I’m trying not to disclose spoilers).

A big talent, and a big loss.

Agreed, Micheal K Williams epic portrayal of the very complex character of Omar was an absolute highlight of the series.

A great talent indeed. RIP.

Very sad to hear this, he bought 'Omar' to life and gave us one of the best 'good' bad guys in TV history.

He was also really good in Boardwalk Empire.
