And then gone onto being one of the most popular and well loved films since, Shawshank Redemption had the same history. Transformers and Phantom menace are amongst the biggest money makers at the cinema, but stink, what's your point?biggrin

It was released right at the end of World War 2 and didn't chime with people's sentiments right after a hard war.

Like a lot of films, plays or shows, it was a slow burner which gathered momentum as the years passed. There are lots of examples of this phenomenon. A drama sometimes needs the right time and circumstances for people to appreciate its virtues.

The Shop Around The Corner is a much much better film IMO.
