It was released right at the end of World War 2 and didn't chime with people's sentiments right after a hard war.... and I have just looked at your profile!
Like a lot of films, plays or shows, it was a slow burner which gathered momentum as the years passed. There are lots of examples of this phenomenon. A drama sometimes needs the right time and circumstances for people to appreciate its virtues.
