BBC2 at 7.30. A live take of Gene Genie(?) that has rcently been unearthed!
Heard the bloke who the clip belongs to on Radio 2 a couple of weeks ago, talking to Johnny Walker. Sounded quite intriguing but I forgot all about it.Thanks for the heads up.
Superb, yes I'm old enough to remember it...quite a unique version too with Mick Ronson(?) having a solo in the middle and lots of harmonica from DB, over 4 minutes long and live (not that the vid/audio sync is any good on it).

Probably more to do with the BBC routinely wiping recordings and losing lots than anything else. Loads of missing episodes of TV programmes and occasionally rare finds. I think a couple of episodes of early Dr Who have been recently found as well.
Before the mid 1970s the BBC (and other TV channels) generally did not keep permanent archive copies of their broadcast material. They didn't think that there would be much interest or commercial reason to hang onto old stuff.VT was also relatively expensive - and its chief practical point was that it could be reused many times.

Possibly the BBC archive circa 1985:
I was never into Bowie though can now appreciate his talent. All I saw last night was a pretty good live rendition from a pasty-faced ging-er and a weirdo in bacofoil but fair play, it was still good and he hit all the notes he attempted.
The thing is so could many others (Rod Stewart was a great performer live) but most were forced to mime in a rather pointless fashion. It was better back then though - more raw and gutsy but then Time does flex like a wh*re and falls w****** to the floor....
