I just watched the new The Thing and wish that the Star Wars Ep 1-3 were done with the same quality and values that the new The Thing film was done - that was a great sequal/prequal, worked really well. Eps 1-3 had good points sure but were massively disappointing, since when did Star Wars become a farce comedy? It was made to pander to what adults think kids like. Kids like serious Star Wars, I was one, I liked it.

ep 3 is better for caring a bit more about the characters i.e. obi wan and the vader strand but its still not great....the whole premise is built upon a sith lord hiding in plain sight and a close relationship between anakin and palpatine that has grown so strong over 2 years or so...nah not for me.

it does help to put together some of the things from 4-6 though like when obi wan dies...

And Vader is tricked into being evil rather than choosing evil, makes his redemption weak imo.

I also think the 'oh btw qui-gonn has found out how to come back to life' is also wk. It just feels like Lucas tacked it on at the end. And why didn't Obi-Wan see him? The bond is meant to be between two who have a strong connection, but Obi-Wan can't see his old master?

well i suppose its because Wilhuff Tarkin was an oversector governor 6th highest rank in the Empire obviously top was emperor, executor, grand vizier etc etc

vader was supreme commander of the imperial fleet and also at one point palpatine's lieutenant iirc
Damn, missed that point amidst all of the action! I should really pay more attention smile

tbh i think vader had more real ranking in the sith order than the empire in episode 4

so for example at the end of ep 3, yoda says to obi wan I have contacted QGJ and I want you to train to contact him....links nicely to obi wan saying to Darth "if you strike me down I'll become more powerful..." etc etc and then he is able to "speak" to Luke and Yoda on Degobah....
Actually, I saw that more as "oh crap, we haven't explained how Obi Wan is able to be speak from beyond the grave yet. We'd better throw in a few lines of dialog to Duck Tape the two trilogies together"

LOL yes. I love his critique of Ep3 where he shows how Padamé couldn't possible fall in love with Anakin because he is such a jerk and all his wooing is cringworthy and would make a girl run a mile. And then, almost as if George Lucas had written in the script "and then she falls in love with him", she falls in love with him. smile

1 has some good scenes, Darth Maul made for a great character and the fight scene between him and the 2 Jedi was great.
Yes but the trouble with that is that early on in the film we establish that Jedi can super-run FWIPPPPP away from things like they did from the Droideka on the Federation ship at the beginning of the film, right? That would be a really handy ability if you needed to, say, run really fast though a load of inexplicably opening and closing doors whilst your Master was getting sliced and diced by an enemy, I'd have thought. smile

Also, for such a great fighter, Darth Maul seems pretty dumb to just wait slack-jawed whilst Obi-Wan somersaults over him at the end of the fight. He'd be more likely to, I dunno, slice his limbs off like Obi-Wan did to Anakin in Ep3. hehe

episode three of 1-3 stands up to repeated viewing more than the others I reckon..although they are complicated films....
WTF? Did you tactically leave the room when Jar Jar Binks was on screen??? or fall asleep during those scenes?

Yep, this is more apparent in the Clone Wars (animated series)

what's your point.

i'm saying story lines about trade federations, senates and embargos are a bit complicated....esp. for younger audiences.

the good versus evil premise of 4-6 was easier to grasp....

jar jar waas an unfortunate irrelevance

they did the whole darth vader thing to han solo too - to a smaller extent - Han shot first

lucas has tried to do a clear line of good and evil rather than the original of an evil man having a change of heart

its a shame he tried to pack so much into part 3 and part 1 did nothing much.

whats got me is in ep4 Obi-wan says i met your father during the clone wars and he was an accomplished pilot.

yet he meets him when he's just a kid and it is somewhat clear this was to pander to the 5 yr olds.

Yeah, Lucas basically rips up most of what is said in the first three to create his envisioned history.
Gary Kurtz was the man behind all the good ideas in Star Wars.

This is pretty much how all three prequels felt to me. Clumsily hammering square pegs into round holes just to try and make improbable links between the old films and the new. When the OP said:

I object to Darth Maul being considered a character. He was essentially a cool looking punchbag. He featured more on the posters for the film than the film itself. Like in the Plinkett review of Phantom Menace, could you describe his character without saying what he looked like or his profession?

I couldn't, seeing as he does nothing in the film except stand around looking menacing.

/Checks blood pressure, decides that may be enough Star Wars ranting for tonight.
