You ever read the original book? His bleepings are written out phonetically as a kind of machine-language ('poot-weet bedoe gung coble deep' is one I remember for some reason). It's suggested that all the various machines 'speak' it to each other. It also explains why people are able to understand R2 from time to time - I guess you could learn to pick up bits of it.

and C3PO has conversations with R2 where he is clearly replying to R2 's comments

I either forgot, or pushed it out of my memory, but at the end, only Threepio gets wiped...soooooo....Artoo knew all along? Everything, Luke's dad, the twins etc? And didn't tell Threepio or any other robot for twenty odd years....wow he's good at keeping secrets!!!!
He has been, but nobody can understand a bloody thing he says hehe
Actually, that's a thought - in Episode 4 C-3PO suggested several times that R2-D2 had been coming out with strange comments for ages, and 'talking about some sort of mission', so maybe there's some truth in that.

I get the impression that C-3PO is a kind of 'robot human' droid designed with his own 'mind' and sense of self-preservation, whereas R2-D2 is more of a 'Swiss Army knife' droid that can be programmed, or assigned to protect and serve a particular person (in this instance, Leia).

Watching Star Wars just. Always love watching Guinness, a proper actor, can give do much with so little.

"That's what your uncle told you, he didn't hold with your fathers ideals, thought he should have stayed here and not gotten involved."
and
"And he was a good friend, which reminds me I have something here for you. Your father wanted you to have this when you were old enough. But your uncle wouldn't allow it. He feared you might follow old Obi-Wan on some damn fool idealistic crusade like your father did."

It really is best if the prequels are forgotten...utterly. smile

It's especially telling that these statements are all contradicted in the prequels.

It's almost like Lucas didn't give a st.

Quite. It struck me immediately. I also think the above is actually a much better story...and in that way that you do I am now reading about Vader on wiki. His early story is much better.
Even in the guise of the original trilogy it's a bit muddled, but from what I just read it's because Luke's dad and Darth were different people in the first film.

I always wondered if the "larger" X-Wing pilot's name was supposed to be a joke.
