What gave you the impression Stannis would be fatter? Robert was fat because he became slothful and lazy. Renly is slim and soft and stannis was the hard edged simple life man. His vices are that he is simple and black and white. Nothing really points towards any gluttonous tendancies.

I always considered him to be quite the opposite.A teeth grinder, mean, meticulous, exact. One of those who has a water for a snack.
Stannis is definitly thinner and leaner in the books. Robert was fat because he had gone to seed, when younger he was a very good warrior but he had sat around drinking when he got the throne.
For me Mark Strong is how I imagined Stannis to be in the books. I dont like the current Stannis as he doesnt look lean enough to me. I am pretty happy with Davos and most of the other characters have turned out how I imagined them.
The one I am really interested to see will be Brienne as that was a very hard person to cast but GRRM said that when they saw her in make up she was exactly how he imagined her to be. The actress playing her is too thin IMO and not built up enough but I guess that can be solved with padding.

Watched episodes 1 & 2 of the new season last night. After the end of the 1st season I read all the books so picking up the TV series again was a bit odd.
Found the 1st episode perhaps a bit slow but the pace and suspense of the 2nd much better, both gave a nice establishment of the story line. I think the casting for Davos was spot on, Stannis not so much I imagined him being a bit closer to Brian Cox (the actor) when reading the books.

Just did, thought hed be abit more portly. Just because he has a more of a simple life, wouldnt mean that he wouldnt indulge on the finer meats befit for a prince...Elroy Blue said:

I thought the killing of Roberts children was shocking enough, OK it didnt involve any of the major characters but it was quite brutal!
I haven't read the books and the 'er indoors was chatting during this episode. Why were these kids killed??First of all get 'er indoors in line.
Secondly, the reason is that the news about Joffrey's father not being Robert but Jaime is now out. Hhence he is not true born heir to the throne and people know that.
Thus they are getting rid of Robert's illegitimate children who could have prior claim to the throne.
The issue of Renly and Stannis claim to the throne they want to deal with in a different way.
Bit pointless putting spoiler tags on it now, harrrumph

But its quite clear in the books he is lean and not interested in any of the finer things in life?!?!?! You must be basing him off Robert or completely missed anything related to Stannis in the books.Im not having a pop I just really cant see how the interpretation can be made unless the book is ignored and the character was built through your own wants?!?!
I have to agree. Stannis in the books is the polar opposite of Roberts character. I think the best way they conveyed it was in the show with the whole bit about "Beloved" in the letter. Stannis is the straight man whereas Robert was the fun loving warmaking boisterous brother. Robert inspired loyalty in his followers through his actions whereas Stannis is more a fear based leader. People loved Robert but feared Stannis.
Renley is meant to be an comprimise between the two but he doesnt get the chance to develop as a character. I think thats a shame as he was a much more interesting character to develop than Stannis.

Just to mention, no bds can be in line to the throne or inherit (anything for that matter, it is just like Plantagenet England, to legalise a bd requires a royal decree)...but they could cause huge political issues and be a focal point for usurpers.
By Westeros law Stannis is the next in line and then Renly....if! people believe the foul calumny and propaganda being put forward by Stannis!!
As I recall in the book, Ned's letter never got to Stannis, and Stannis slightly resents Ned a bit. The TV show just simplifies things.
