I dont think the rights to a foreign country is milking it.

And yeah, I felt for the annoying man as well.

My wife manages a care home, this was very close to the truth. Previously i would have gladly ripped Gervaises head off for being the UK's biggest unfunny cock end. As Derek he was brilliant, (possibly true as it actually is him).
Near tears on occasion through the series, both in ha,ha and truly empathic.

Strong episode tonight. Even tinnie man was acceptable.
The Kev character certainly got better as the series progressed.

Glad to hear that C4 have commissioned series 2.
I think he's a good character in the wrong situation. I cant see how anyone would tolerate him there (except perhaps Derek).
Thats the point, as tonight's episode neatly described.
yes
I must admit, I posted before watching the final episode (which was great). So now I know what the "point" of that character was. And I now think he was an important part of the whole series. But it still seems odd that (in real life) he would be allowed to hang around.

I think he is there because he is ultimately dislikeable. The only real difference between Derek and Kev is the fact Derek is nice, and Kev is not. In the 'making of' Gervais said that Derek is as he is not to poke fun at mentally ill, rather to have what would normally be things that are dislikeable, or strange. The walk, the hair, the voice, the mannerisms, but the 'niceness' trumps it all, instantly. The only reason Kev is disliked is not because of how he looks, dresses, etc, none of that matters. The fact is he is the opposite of Derek. The other characters, Hannah, Dougie, etc, are likeable people, and have hero moments, and so on. Kev has nothing remotely respectable.

Anyway, great last episode, and a superb series. Really enjoyed it.

Reminded me a little of the Fools And Horses jaunt to the seaside.

More than rights, both him and Merchant are Exectuve Producers and as much as I love it it jumped the shark ages ago. He has even appeared on it as David Brent.

I found Derek extremely Cheesy, a cheese fest in overdrive, similar to the Office US can be sometime.s

Derek was an absolutely charming tv series full of well-observed humour, and the just the right amount of poignancy.

Already looking forward to the next series.

Last one bowled me over. At times I thought "they're laying it on a bit too thick here" but I was won over by it in the end anyway. Really original, really clever. Top stuff!

Even tinnie man came good at the end, but the scene of the car driving past his dad as he walked down the street and that brief moment where you thought "he's not gonna stop"......powerful stuff I thought!

My missus' summed up how I was thinking about it too. She said "st! Ricky Gervais can act!"

Narrr!! There was no way he wouldnt have stopped! - I'd have been properly gutted if he hadn't!!

The bit that still cracks me up is the Jumble sale frog. I saw a very similar one in somebody's garden yesterday and started laughing at it.

The first series (or at least some of it - can't remember how much) of the US version were remakes of UK episodes. After that, I don't think Gervais and Merchant have retained any meaningful ongoing involvement.

I think I remember seeing that Merchant directed (and maybe also wrote) an episode, and Gervais has a couple of very minor cameos as Brent, but that's about the extent of it.

The quality is a bit variable, but by and large I do still enjoy the US version, even though it has dragged on to long. (I think it's just about coming to the end of the final series in the US now....)

I really didn't "get" Derek to begin with. I warmed to it as it went on, and I do admit to feeling vaguely moved by last night's episode (Coldplay notwithstanding).

Had to watch this after all these comments......what are you all smoking? Gervais needs to start making RSPCA adverts if that's his bag.

Contrive, smothered in cheese and pushed along by a Cold play instrumental that seemed to last 10 minutes!

Not sure what his follow up will be? Warrik Davis as a janitor on a kids oncology ward....maybe Snow Patrol will get in on it!

I think Office US became a very different show, targeting a less cynical weary audience.

I know they had creative input in the very early episodes, and then left it alone to mature as a US series.
Never knew DB was in it, ace! I am hoping the sky comedy channel shows them all in order, then I would concentrate on Watching them.

i am not a troll, butwhen rg has taken the piss out of comedians for using stupid wigs, music, set ups etc I just can't get it.

it feels like an Andy Kaufman esq piss take out of the viewers, it just pushed the boundaries of milking the set piece of bitter-sweet comedy.

Has he used a stupid wig in Derek? I don't see a comparison between Derek and the sitcom within a sitcom from Extras.
